New Swag Magnet, seul&SEUL Opens in Taikoo Place

Everything about Nanjing Lu spells trendy, it is a rich neighborhood filled with brand name stores and high-end luxury shopping. So it doesn't surprise us that the newly opened Taikoo Place, located on Shimen Yi Lu and Nanjing Lu is filled with high-end lifestyle, wellness shops and F&B outlets. Joining the likes of Constellation 7 in Taikoo Place is the new swag magnet, seul&SEUL.


THE CONCEPT



seul&SEUL is a restaurant and lounge bar that aims to serve delectable fusion cuisine and well-crafted cocktails. Upon entering seul&SEUL, get ready to be blown away. The place is spacious and has a similar spatial design to “The Nest” or “Cannery”, including a bar, lounge, dining area, private dining rooms with rooftop al fresco dining and a full view of the city lights.


 
We are told the concept of the restaurant is “humble, tiny and changeable”, but at first glance the design of the restaurant is far from humble.


THE CUISINE


 Ingredients: rice, Ama Ebi sashimi and Green curry. Rice in the form of crisps while the special green curry carries distinct Southeast Asian flairs


From the time the first dish arrives, you realize the concept “tiny” is well delivered. The portions are bite-sized, which is great for your waistline. Don’t let their delicate portions fool you; each mouthful is packed with flavor. Their 8-course dinner (RMB498 with 10% service charge) is a unique collage straight from the imagination.

How does “humble” fit the restaurant concept? The chef has 13 years of culinary experience, and after working abroad and in Shanghai, he wants the food to be approachable and friendly. The dishes are prepared simply, yet elegantly. The natural taste of ingredients comes through. Each dish is made and presented with no false air of pretentiousness.


“Humble” is also reflected in the service standards. And the cutlery is inside the drawers of your table. Hence, you still have to help-yourself.

seul&SEUL does not have a menu. No stable menu means new dishes everyday with what’s available in the market, hence “Changeable” (ahhh, the concept is now so clear). It allows the chef to not only get the freshest ingredients, but it also gives him more creative freedom to come up with inspired dished based on what's available on the market.

When you come to seul&SEUL they will just introduce you to the ingredients available, you pick those you prefer and then let the chef surprise you.

Of course if is there any dish you really want to have for the night, you just need to tell them in advance.

How does seul&SEUL fair? We got a full set tasting containing 8 dishes. And we can tell the effort chef put in to make his cuisine memorable.  


We can taste the western influence of the chefs culinary background with his strong sense of French inspired cooking, especially how he prepares his vegetables and roasted cooking process.

Some other dishes satisfy the Asian palate with slightly crispy shrimp and tender seafood. A fusion of how western dishes become adapted to the local palate.


Beef Waygu with roasted vegetables, mustard seeds and a Gillardeau oyster sauce.


Each dish is colorful, like a tiny sculpture from the chef’s imaginative expertise. Check out the dessert, it sparkles in your mouth.



Vanilla ice cream with surprising sparkling fruit snow, paired with fresh fruits confit into wild honey.


Being fusion, it is a place you can bring a client or your group of international friends for a high-end gathering. Better yet, this is great for any adventure seeking foodies.



Like the food, seul&SEUL’s drinks are all tailor-made. No menu, it’s all about your craving in the instant. Are you in the mood for rum, a bourbon or a vodka? Do you prefer it sweet, sour or spicy? Just tell the bartender and he will make it for you. 


We asked them for something smoky with sweet notes, and they certainly delivered. We had a mix of grapefruit with some sweet and sour touches, and a slightly smoky after taste.


 
Who you should go with:  Your date who has a penchant for culture, as this fusion spotwill be impressive for a lady or gentleman of culture.
What you should drink: Treat yourself and ask the bar manager to tailor make a cocktail for you or for your date. Of course you can tell them your own preference of ingredients!
What you should eat: if any of the dishes introduced in this article grab your attention don’t hesitate to ask for it. We were delighted by the Waygu beef and the sparkling dessert.
