Hey, Wonderland's Got Some New Food and Drinks
If you want to avoid arguments with friends, stay away from the following topics: religion, politics, and Wonderland on Xinzha Lu.
The bar splits opinions rather sharply between those who see it as an over-the-top gimmick, and those who appreciate the unbridled creativity. We happen to love the hell out of it. They swing the bat hard, and even when they whiff on a drink here or there, it’s a joy to watch. So when they invited us to check out their new food menu and some quirky new cocktails we put our top hats and monocles on and had a didi driver whisk us away to their magical alcohol den.
The New Food
Wonderland’s new food menu is just as bizarre, colorful and unpredictable as the décor. That will surely be a turn-off to some, but adventurous eaters will enjoy the experience of wondering what you’re looking at each time a dish arrives, as well as the thrill of finding out they’re (mostly) pretty damn good.
Steak tartar with caviar mustard and a wasabi cream mousse, RMB 90
The steak tartar was a dish that raised our eyebrows quite a bit, after all, you really have to know what the hell you’re doing to serve something like that. Luckily for our health and well-being, they’re well aware of how to prepare and serve it. It’s made from imported Argentina tenderloin and served with caviar, egg yolk, spicy mustard and a dollop of pretty amazing wasabi mousse.
Smorgastarta, seafood sandwich cake, RMB 60
We have to admit the seafood sandwich cake wasn’t quite our cup of tea, but not bad. And the name is cool.
It’s hard to believe that not only can you get oysters at wonderland, but they’re just RMB 15 a pop. Is this the best oyster deal in the city? Might just be. Served on ice with lemon and a BYFO signature hot sauce, these Fine de Claires alone might be worth the trip.
If you like feta and need a cheese fix, this one is gold. Baked on a bed of beet root puree and surrounded by grilled vegetables.
The Drinks
If you’ve visited (or even seen some photos) you can probably tell- Wonderland is sort of a girly bar. The drinks are loud, colorful, and tailor-made for taking cell phone shots and selfies with. But understood in that regard, they’re pretty outstanding. And make no mistake about it, they're as strong as they are pretty.
A grasshopper's minty, creamy booziness is perfect for a summer buzz, and Wonderland does them as well as anyone around.
If an espresso martini with tequila sounds weird to you, yea, us too. Somehow though, defying all logic, it was our favorite one. The tequila isn’t one bit overwhelming and, who knew, it mixes perfectly with a bitter coffee flavor.
If any or all of these drinks look enjoyable we have some great news: every day from 4-7pm cocktails are buy-one-get-one free!
