Meat Party! 6 Incredible Meat Dishes in Shanghai

2017-08-31 ShanghaiWOWeng

There are a million reasons you should go vegetarian or vegan: it’s healthy, less impactful on the environment, it prevents your participation in the killing of animals etc etc. So you should do it. BUT. Before you go down that route, you should at least give meat a proper send off. Here are 5 incredible, meaty Shanghai dishes to help you kiss your meat eating era goodbye.

4 Stack @ Bistro Burger

Price: RMB200 (free if you finish in under 15 minutes)

Address: 1/F, 291 Fumin Lu

Tel: 021 6170 1315

Hours: Mon-Sat, 11am-12am, Sun 11am-10pm

You like meat, you got meat. 800 grams of it in total, delivered in the form of 4 thick paddies. That’s not all though, layers of gruyere, mozzarella, cheddar and blue cheese. Grilled onions, BACON, fried egg, tomato, lettuce and pickles. You’ll want to savor this one, but if you’re feeling cheeky you can try their Monday challenge: finish in 15 minutes it’s free. If you finish in less than 8 minutes it’s free, and so is the bill for your entire table.

Zeitgeist platter

Price: RMB188

Address: 537 Haifang Lu

Tel: 021 3220 5986

Hours: Daily: 11am-2am, Lunch: 11:30am-3pm, Dinner: 11:30am-11pm, Late night menu until 1:30am

Zeitgeist hasn’t been around all that long, but meaty German sausages certainly have. Thick, meticulous and freshly-made German sausages surrounded by sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, for RMB188 it’s a practical dish for enjoying one last meaty horahhhh.

Angus Australian Tomahawk Steak @ The Cut

Price: RMB788

Address: IAPM Mall, 6/F, 999 Huaihai Zhong Lu

Tel: 021 6443 5136

Hours: Daily, 11am–11pm

Meat is the specialty at IAPM’s The Cut. And among all their amazing meats, one shines brighter and more juicier than all the others: the Angus Australian Tomahawk Steak. Technically this is for 2-4 people, seeing as it’s 1.2 kg, but if this is your last dalliance with beef perhaps you can try going it alone. Little pricey at RMB788, but think of it as a worthy expense for your big meaty good-bye party.

Cumin Ribs At Di Shui Dong

Price: RMB22

Address: 2/F, 56 Maoming Nan Lu

Tel: 021 6253 2689

Hours: Daily, 11am-11pm

There are two types of people in Shanghai: those who know Di Shui Dong’s ribs are the best, and those who haven’t been to Di Shui Dong. These spicy cumin ribs defy description and explanation, you will dream about them. In fact, if you decide to go vegan, these might eventually be the reason you break down and switch back to being a carnivore.

Lion's Head Meatballs

Price: RMB 15-30

Address: Most Shanghainese restaurants

Shizitou (‘Lion’s head’) meatballs are truly amazing. These traditional Shanghainese balls of glory are made with pork (occasionally with some crab meat added as well), then doused in a sweet, thick hongxiao sauce. The result: meat bliss.
