Fresh-off Brings Taiwanese Fried Sandwiches to Shanghai

2017-09-01 ShanghaiWOWeng

Shanghai’s resident superstar chef Austin Hu is at it again. This time around he’s collaborated with Taiwanese native Jessica Chu to bring us Fresh-off, a Taiwanese fried sandwich spot on Ziyun Xi Lu.

Employees getting ready to send out a corporate delivery. Fresh-off will also do big office lunch orders and catering.

You may have already guessed, but yes, ‘Fresh-off’ does indeed refer to “fresh off the boat.” In case you’re completely unaware of what that means:

  1. The phrase fresh off the boat (FOB) is used to describe immigrants that have arrived from a foreign nation and have not yet assimilated into the host nation's culture, language, and behavior, but still continue with their ethnic ideas and practices.

  2. A television show on ABC developed by chef Eddie Huang, based on his best-selling memoir of the same name, which takes a humorous look at the lives of immigrants in America.

Why did they name it that?

Well for starters, Austin, Jessica and their designer Ben Yi all consider themselves to be FOB in one way or another. So that’s part of it. More importantly though- they developed the clever concept that each sandwich is a sort of ‘boat,’ sailing glorious flavors from faraway countries right into your mouth.

These sandwiches aren’t an entirely new idea, those who have visited Taiwan will recognize them as jazzed-up versions of Keelung Miaokou Night Market’s fried sandwiches. Sweet donut-like buns, lots of filling and (usually) a lot of sweet mayo as well.

We tried three boats…

‘Classic’ - Marinated egg, ham, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, sweet mayo. RMB 28

‘Beijing duck’ - Smoked duck breast, plum sauce, cucumber, scallion, leek, lettuce, mayo. RMB38

‘Oppa Fried Chicken’ - Korean-style fried chicken, cabbage, pickled daikon, sesame, gochujang sauce, scallion, mayo. RMB 35

What is there to say really- of course each sandwich was amazing. I mean come on, Austin Hu made them.  With all prices below RMB 40, a big selection of fruity teas and sodas, and lots of outdoor seating, it’s a safe bet we’ll be back here a lot.

We were also happy to hear they’ll be on eleme and (probably) Sherpa’s sometime in the next 2 or 3 weeks. They’re also eyeing a few locations around Peoples Square and Jing’an for a possible second store.
