Launch of Oriental Fisherman's Wharf
Shanghai’s oldest port, the Oriental Fisherman’s Wharf which dates back to 1938 is gaining a new feature. A HUGE shopping mall spanning a whopping 190,000m2. (That’s really big.) This mall was designed by top architecture firm Perkins and Will and cost a respectable RMB4 billion. It’s set to be the biggest industrial project on the Huangpu River to date.
The original wharf rose to fame in the 19th century, it housed China’s first power station as well as textiles houses and other factories. The structure originally resembled the famous fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco and soon housed the first official fish market in China the Jiangpu fish market. However, this did not appeal to modern audiences and so the space was in desperate need of a revamp.
The mall is designed to look like two fish meeting, in a nod to the history of the site. Perkins and Will is an American architecture firm that was established in 1935. They are leaders in energy and environmental design and are recognized worldwide for their prowess. They have won several awards including the 2015 American Planning Association’s National Planning Excellence Award, and 2010 National Building Museum’s Honor Award for Civic Innovation.
In conjunction with Oriental Fisherman’s Wharf, the company has designed a separate 4-storey building, known as Oneotria. A 11000㎡ shopping mall, the building will house luxury brands, jewelry, shoes and bags retailers, clothes customization shops, an art museum, a car exhibition hall, Italian restaurants and more.
There are already more than 20 brands setting up shop inside the new mall and there are others companies waiting to join then.
The mall also caters to sailing enthusiasts, as it has recently opened a sailing club which provides sailing activities along the river.
Finished walking Oneotria? Then head over to the main building, which spans over 50000 sqm and 7 floors, for more shopping and dining options!
