Podcasts Every Shanghai Expat Should be Listening to

2017-09-13 ShanghaiWOWeng

Podcasts have officially taken over the universe, offering countless shows on any topic you could imagine. Here are some great ones that anyone living in Shanghai might benefit from checking out.

Tech in Shanghai

The booming China tech and startup scene is rapidly re-shaping the world. Tech in Shanghai connects with the top movers and shakers around the city for some REAL TALK about what’s going on, the trials and triumphs of their journey, and what they’ve learned along the way.

The Shanghai Show

“A weekly comedy show to get you through the insanity that is life in Shanghai.” Hosts interview everyone from visiting acts like The Blue Man Group, to expats and entrepreneurs such as Stuart Baldwin of The Apartment. The show hasn’t added a new episode since March, but you can still beef up on some city history with their catalog of older episodes.

Shanghai Comedy Corner

“Shanghai Comedy Corner is a fun platform to promote amazing artists bringing live entertainment to China & Shanghai. Created by Julien B., long-term French comedian in China.” Although they haven’t added a new episode in almost a year, there’s an impressively extensive catalog of old episodes featuring fascinating Shanghai artists, business people and personalities.

The China Africa Project

It may be a little bit too policy-oriented and in-depth for casual podcast listeners, put this show focuses on what very well may become one of the biggest geopolitical issues of this century: China’s relationship with Africa, and the wide-ranging implications of it.

Limitless Laowai

A podcast with hundreds of episodes that focuses on expat wellness in China, something we could all benefit from no doubt.

The China History Podcast

If you’re even remotely interested in China’s rich history, this is the podcast for you. Laszlo Montgomery hosts and features a new, wildly fascinating and often overlooked historical event from China’s past.

Made in China Podcast

“Hear the ins and outs of sourcing, procurement, product development, and brand building as two international entrepreneurs based in South China share a free-flowing conversation and bring experts on the show…Besides sharing their expertise in sourcing they focus on online & social media marketing, crowdfunding campaigns, consulting, team management and overall life as an expat in China”

Sinica

“Recorded on Fridays at intervals ranging from once a week to once a month. Hosted by Baidu’s head of international relations, Kaiser Kuo, and Jeremy Goldkorn, author of one of China’s best-known English-language blogs, the shows usually last around 45 minutes and bring together journalists and academics to talk through issues in the news.”

Mandarin Chinese Lessons with Serge Melnyk

He may look and sound a little bit goofy, but believe us when we tell you: this man will teach you Chinese. The podcasts are perfectly structured for simple daily lessons that are thoroughly explained in English and even have downloadable worksheets if you want to take it to the next level.

Hear Shanghai - Bivouac Recording

'Hear Shanghai' is a collection of field recordings that encourages listening within your environment to bring you closer to where you are. All recordings are made within the municipality of Shanghai and are updated daily.
