2017-09-16 ShanghaiWOWeng

One of the quintessential items of a hearty breakfast is pancakes. Whether they be American style, Crepes or soufflé, they are a delight to have. Eaten with globs of butter or drowned in syrup, here are the best places in town to get some.

Al’s Diner

Address: 204 Xinle Lu

Tel: 021-54651259

Hours: Daily, 9am to midnight

The super star buttermilk pancakes  (RMB50) at Al’s diner are super fluffy with a taste that genuinely reminds you of home. The serving is extremely generous, especially since each cake is very thick. You can add chocolate chips and chocolate fudge, as you wish for RMB10 each. But we enjoy these bad boys plain.

Another amazing pancake from Al’s is the Blueberry Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes (RMB60) With a blueberry compote drizzled on top, it is the perfect treat to sweeten your breakfast routine.

Mr Pancake House

First place that might come to your mind for pancakes in Shanghai is probably Mr. Pancakes. These pancakes looked like they walked out of a New Jersey diner. There is no fancy air about it. You can lather your pancake in butter and syrup... there is enough to go around. A stack of these babies will set you back RMB45.

Brut Cake Cafe

Hours: Mon-Fri 7am to 9pm, Sat & Sun 10am to 8pm

Tel: 17321008129

Made with Almond flour, the Double Stack is a light and airy pancake topped with mascarpone Chantilly and drizzled with organic jujube honey and housemade fruit jam and fresh fruit. This pancake is not overpoweringly sweet and won’t leave chunks of gooey maple syrup in your mouth. If there is a perfect pancake, this is it.

The Milkshake Bar

Address: 75 Changshu Lu

Hours: Tues to Fri, 4pm to 10pm; Sat & Sun, noon to 11pm

Tel: 021 54562050

After the series of crazy milkshake concoctions created by owner Charles, nothing seems too over the top for The Milkshake Bar. Their Red Velvet pancake (RMB95)  is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a cute orange ducky (the duck is made from hard candy, so it is completely edible). After one bite, it is like tasting heaven.

Egg

Soufflé pancakes are light, airy and perfectly comforting. They offer brown sugar soufflé pancakes every weekend. The toppings change every weekend though, always a pleasant surprise! RMB 58.

Henkes

Tel : 021 3253 0889

These thick & fluffy pancakes come with delicate caramelized apples and mascarpone cream. They add a little twist to the Aussie rules by adding some maple syrup with them. We forgive them because it makes the dish so damn delicious. RMB 88

La Creperie

Address: 1 Taojiang Lu/ 1601 Nanjing Xi Lu

Hours: Daily 10.30 am- 12 pm

Tel: 021 3253 7978

La Creperie is a classic spot for Crepe lovers. "La Sexy Suzette" is a liqueur-drenched dishe from France. It’s a classic with a twist; no orange marmalade in this version.  More exotic and acidulous, it is puffed with homemade lemon cream and topped with mango ice cream. Then, the crepe is “flambéed”. This impressive process requires a dousing of Grand Marnier on the dessert and a light to make it flame up. The flames burns the flammable alcohol, and only a thick, caramelised sauce remains. RMB 62 for this tableside performance.

ODelice!

Address: 208 Xinle Lu/ 133 Tianyaoqiao Lu/ 3219 Hongmei Lu

Hours: Daily 8am- 12pm

Tel: 021-33686862

Smoothest and thickest crêpe on our list. Odelice! offers a mouthwatering version of this traditional French dessert. Cinnamon apples cooked with a butter base and topped with a homemade salted butter caramel sauce and Vanilla Ice cream. For RMB 52, this indulging treat is a steal.

Papito
