MoveM: Your Neighborhood Spinning Studio
Shanghai’s spinning craze isn’t slowing down, with new studios popping up right and left. After moving in and opening just a couple of months ago, MoveM is one of the new studios you should check out.
Tucked in an alley off of Yuyuan Road in Jing’an, they are literally your neighborhood spinning studio. Their space is small but cozy, with everything you need. The space is outfitted with tasteful decorations, plants, and neon inspirational signs to welcome you.
The Story
The MOVEM founders are best friends who decided to give up their corporate jobs to do follow their passion. Being fitness enthusiasts and life explorers, they couldn’t see themselves working in finance for the rest of their lives, and decided to do something exciting together.
They’ve lived and worked in New York, London, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong, and tried the best studios for inspiration. After moving to Shanghai, they wanted to make the same impact by starting with wellness and fitness, trying to dismantle the conventional gym-going norm and inspire more personal fitness journeys.
The Facilities
The lobby is littered with gorgeous couches and plants, and a smoothie bar in the corner. When you book your class you can also choose if you want a smoothie included (!), provided by Thank God It’s Fresh (TGIF). The design of the studio is simple yet sexy, which is a relief after all of the superficial flair you find in Shanghai these days.
They have a modern gender neutral bathroom, and separate locker rooms equipped with showers, towels, shampoo and conditioner, and a very Zen vibe to wind you down after class. There are also key pad lockers where you can store your things, which are mostly straight forward to use.
After you check in, they’ll take you upstairs where you’ll grab your Shimano shoes and head into the spinning room. Your bike will be waiting for you with a hand towel, weights, and smiling instructor to help you out if you need.
The Class
The classes have everything you would want in a spinning class; the moves, the music, and the energy. They have top of the line equipment and an epic sound system so you forget where you are and spin away you stress.
I took Cata’s class, and her music was awesome. She incorporated moves like tap-backs, dips, pushups, and hovers into the choreography, while keeping a close eye on our form. She encouraged us to push ourselves more and give everything we could in that small window of 45 minutes we had together. I left the class feeling energized and wishing there had been a couple more songs.
