Shanghai's Most Beautiful Vintage Shops

2017-10-16 ShanghaiWOWeng

I. Love. Vintage. I love all things vintage. I am a millennial wannabe hipster and I am cool with that. Moving to Shanghai was a bit of a downer for me when it comes to fashion. I was used to spending my Saturday afternoon digging through thrift shops and jumble sales and wandering around east London looking for 1940’s gems. The lack of vintage clothing available here made me sad… AND THEN… I stumbled across my first vintage shop and since then I have been on a Pokemon Go style mission to find ‘em all... A.K.A crashing around Shanghai with my phone in my hand annoyed that all the addresses online are wrong.

So here is what I found, and how you can find them.

Lolo Loves Vintage

Address: 2 Yongfu Lu

Opening times:  Daily 12:00-21:00

WeChat Shop: Bee’s Knees Club

A little tricky to find, but totally worth it.

Step 1: Go to number 2 Yongfu Lu, on the corner of Wuyuan Lu.

Step 2: Locate the small blue door

Step 3: Push on the door, if it’s shut ring the bell.

I think Lolo Loves Vintage is probably one of most beautiful shops in all of Shanghai. (Tied with Annata Vintage but I will get to that.) Stocking only legit vintage items from the 1900’s to the early 1980’s. This shop is like walking into a bohemian fantasy lost in the 1940’s.

Most of the items sold are shipped from Japan, Europe, and the US. The owner Lolo goes on big buying trips a few times a year and comes back with the most incredible things. The best thing about her shop is there is no need to dig frantically looking for a gem because every item is handpicked and the whole store is carefully curated.

The prices are reasonable for the quality of the items and there is a very very very cute kitten.  Even if you’re not into vintage I would recommend stopping by.

Annata Vintage

Address: Building 23, 316 Jianguo Xi Lu

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday 2pm-8pm

Shop: https://weidian.com/s/1567530?ifr=shopdetail&wfr=c

Another amazingly beautiful shop, Annata vintage, again a little tricky to find. I am not normally a fan of having to work to spend my money, but Annata vintage is worth the hunt.

Step 1: Find number 319 Jianguo Xi Lu

Step 2: Walk into the lane and look for building number 23, you will see a small blue sign.

Step 3: Push the door to the right of the sign and you're in.

You will walk into a really beautiful little courtyard if you have time I would recommend staying for a cup of tea and basking in all the 1920’s glitz.

The shop itself is stocked with vintage fashion mainly from Europe and the USA and holds items from the 1920’s onwards.

They have the most incredible selection of 1920’s style evening gowns that you can buy or hire. The hiring rates are really reasonable and they can offer accessories to accompany any dress.

If you ever find yourself in this part of town it's worth stopping by, the staff are super friendly and you can try everything on, it’s generally excellent fun. If you never thought vintage was for you I am pretty certain you can find an era that you will fall in love it.

Rik Rak

WeChat: AMRcollection

Shop: www.rikrakshack.com

Anyone that is big into their vintage, or who wants to be but can never find the right size etc know how hard it can be to wear vintage. Women were skinnier in the 1920’s when they thought cigarettes and cocaine were ‘healthy’ alternatives to vegetables and they hung dresses that weighed the same as a baby elephant off of their withered frames.

Luckily there is an alternative and it’s ‘vintage style’ pieces. All the comfort of modern clothing with the glamour of the past. I went to meet Alexandra from RikRak who is a Shanghai-based designer that specializes in vintage clothing.

Her collections range from 1920’s flapper to 40’s swing right up to 60’s mini dresses. And all dresses have matching hats/fascinators available. Who doesn't LOVE a pork pie hat.

All of the clothing can be customized and she takes orders regularly. She is based in Xuhui and you can get in touch with her via WeChat or through her shop to arrange a good old try on and browse.

Un-Time Machine摩登时光鸡

Address: 3F, Building 4, Lane 230 Fuxing West Road

Opening times:  Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday 12:00-19:00

Shop: http://e22a.com/h.GoO9wT?cv=WSJiG8vVBm

The Chinese translates to ‘Modern Time Machine Chicken’ I’m not sure what that’s all about but the shop is amazing.

Possibly the most difficult to find...

Step 1: Go to Fuxing Lu number 230

Step 2: Follow the little ‘vintage’ sign painted on the wall (security guard wouldn't let me take a picture I'm not sure why.)

Step 3: Head up the stairs like you are walking into someone's house because you kinda are.

Step 4:  Ring the door bell

Un-Time Machine specializes in vintage designer accessories.  They stock Chanel handbags from the 1920’s, Hermes scarves from the 1940’s. Shoes that will make you drool and accessories that make your fingers twitch just looking at them.

I fell in love with a handbag and was merrily swinging it around and wondering if I could fit phone, make-up, emergency tampons and the like, in it when I thought to check the price... RMB17000. I put it down veeeeeeeerrrrryyyy carefully.

Pawn Shop

Address: Building 6, 64 Fenyang Road (Confusingly it’s actually on Fuxing Lu next to Union Trading)

Opening times: Daily 11am-9pm

Shop: http://stylites.net/pawnstar

The last shop on my list is technically not a vintage shop but I’m including it because it’s a really cool concept, and there is some vintage stuff.

Pawn Star is basically a designer concession/secondhand store. People can bring items of clothing in and the shop sells them on for you taking a fair amount of commission off the top. (Fair, they have rent to pay).

If you are looking for a Chanel coat but can’t quite stretch your purse strings to a brand new one, this is the place for you. It allows you the luxury and quality of designer dresses for the price of high street items.

They stock everything from evening wear to accessories and well as daytime outfits. Everything is priced really reasonably, in fact, I compared the prices in store to the prices on EBay and found the store to be cheaper.

Smack bang in the middle of the FFC I would recommend you make popping in part of your weekly routine. You never know when they are going to have that Hermes bag from 2014 you have always lusted over.
