Cashier-less Convenience Stores Hit Shanghai
Imagine if Family Mart was self-service, with no cashiers. That is, essentially, the idea behind Gorilla, a new chain of 24-hour convenience stores that have sprouted up 8 locations around Shanghai.
Although the stores don’t have cashiers, they do have some employees (at least for now) who help show customers how to use the check-out. It’s actually not as simple as you'd expect, especially if you can’t read Chinese.
First you have to download their app, Xingbianli. Then you must get on the store’s wifi (the password at every location is the same: 12345678). You must then scan the QR codes of the items you wish to purchase, and pay for them by going through either Alipay or Wechat Pay.
It sounds complicated but once you’ve done it all once you’re all set to go after that.
