10 Metro Stops You Should Check Out

2017-10-22 ShanghaiWOWeng

The Shanghai Metro is totally amazing. It has 9+ million daily riders, 364 stations, and a total length of 588 kilometers (365 miles). Of course everyone knows Jing’an and People’s Square, but do you know some other great stops to check out? Let us help with that….

Shanghai Circus World (Line 1)

The Shanghai Circus World metro station has that name for a reason. Just a short walk away you can find the actual Circus World. It’s 22,500 square meters and 1,638 seats, all dedicated to (quite spectacular) regular acrobatics and circus shows.

Century Park (Line 2)

As you might have guessed, Century Park is a park. A huge park. In fact, it’s the biggest park in the entire city: 140 hectares (346 acres) divided into seven parts. There’s the Lakeside Scenic Area, the Forest Landscape Area, the Amenity Grass, the Nature Reserve, the Folk Village, the Exotic Zone, and the Mini Golf Course

Meilan Lake (Line 7)

At the very end of line 7 you can find the Meilan Lake station which, yes, has Meilan Lake right nearby. It’s maybe not the most gorgeous body of water you’ll ever encounter, but it’s quirky and interesting, and far enough from the city central that it’s almost like visiting another city.

Huangxing Park (Line 8)

Line 8’s Huangxing Park station looks rather unexciting on the metro map, but don’t sleep on this one. There’s a large park, a lake, and surprisingly not too many people around most days. A good way to relax among some nature vibes without actually leaving the city.

China Art Museum (Line 8)

China Art Museum is worth a visit, even if it’s just to gawk at the amazing architecture of “that big red building.” The art inside isn’t too shabby either though.

Songjiang Xincheng (Line 9)

Line 9’s Songjiang Xincheng station isn’t all that interesting to be honest. BUT, about a 20 minute walk west and you’ll be in Thames Town, a freakishly authentic looking replica of a classic British market town. The 1 square kilometer town was completed in 2006, and cost around RMB 5 billion to construct.

Xinjiangwancheng (Line 10)

Just outside of Xinjiangwancheng, the last stop on Line 10, you can find SMP skatepark. For a brief while after it was built in 2005, this was the largest skatepark in the entire world. More than 12,000 square meters in size, it has every sort of ramp you can imagine and even a 5,000-seat stadium. Even if you don’t skate or bike or rollerblade, it’s still a sight to behold.

Shanghai Automobile City (Line 11)

It’s pretty far from the city central, but The Shanghai Auto Museum is a great place to go burn a free day, especially if you’re into cars.  Opened to the public in 2007, the space has around 100 cars from all different eras and styles.

International Cruise Terminal (Line 12)

Shanghai International Cruise Terminal is a pretty strange place. Upon exiting the metro you’ll be greeted by an enormous thing that, well… you’ll just have to look at the photo. And once you snap your own shot you can stroll around a riverside park nearby.

World Expo Museum (Line 13)

The last stop before pudong on line 13 looks A LOT like pudong. It’s vast, empty and filled with enormous (mostly abandoned) buildings. The World Expo Museum is directly across the street from the metro station and very much worth a visit, even if it’s just to snap some shots of the building’s breath-taking architecture.

Wild Animal Park (Line 16)

The photos of Shanghai Wild Animal Park look a little bit unsafe, but perhaps that’s half the fun. Way out on line 16 you can check out this enormous park that features over 200 kinds of animals including a giant panda hall, golden monkey hall, parrot house, white lion area, white tiger area, ostrich zone, kangaroo zoo and crocodile island.
