Holy Cow 1.0 Closes, Mi Xiang Yuan 2.0 Opening Soon

Big news from Chef Anthony Zhao this week, as Holy Cow has just shuttered their first branch at Xiaomuqiao Lu. Open since autumn 2014, Holy Cow popularized the Chaoshan-style fresh beef hot pot introduced to Shanghai. It quickly grew a loyal following and garnered many accolades due to their insistence on food quality with hand cut fresh beef, natural bone broth and family farm sourced vegetables.

While we will miss the original branch, both the Bingo Mall and Star Plaza locations are open and operating as usual.

Additionally, for the Shanghai Mitao Restaurant group, this week marks a new, exciting chapter for the Mi Xiang Yuan brand. Originally opened in Xintiandi over 6 years ago, Mi Xiang Yuan (aka The Rice Garden) 2.0 will continue a focus on convenient, affordable and delicious lunch sets at their new Gopher Plaza location.

This location is only the beginning for Mi Xiang Yuan, as Anthony Zhao aims to turn the Gopher Plaza location into a chain as they take their "standardized recipes and menus" to "open in many of Shanghai's central business districts and become a brand people can rely on for accessible, affordable, familiar and healthy lunch."

This new location sees a full technological upgrade to include German Rational programmable ovens to ensure consistently juicy and crispy meats, Panasonic rice cookers and mobile phone ordering via QR code at your table.

Mi Xiang Yuan also underwent rigorous testing of rice from all over Asia before settling on an organic brand of Wuchang rice; widely regarded as the best in China. Expect this special rice to feature in lunch sets ranging from Lu Rou Fan (minced pork and shallots), beef tendon curry and chicken teriyaki.

The opening date is set for November 15 and we can’t wait to visit.
