Strip it Off for Good! How's & Where's of Laser Hair Removal

2017-11-12 ShanghaiWOWeng

It might not exactly be bikini weather at the moment, but if you are considering lazer hair removal then right now is a good time of year to be thinking about it. Lazer hair removal is a semi-permenant hair removal technique that lasts for 2-3 years after you have a few sessions. You normally need 3-7 sessions to achieve a few years hair free. It isn’t cheap but when you think about how hassle free your life will be without having to worry about stray hairs, you may soon decide it’s worth it.

How Does it Work?

Lasers are useful to remove unwanted hair from anywhere on the body, face, legs, arms, underarms and bikini line.

Process:

The pulsing of the laser can remove many hairs at a time, the area of the laser is about as large as a quarter. Some places such as upper lip may take a few minutes, but larger surface areas such as the leg or the back can take anywhere up to an hour (depending on the machine).

Benefits:

Lasers can select coarse and dark hairs, leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

After 3-7 sessions, depending where on the body, hair loss will be achieved.

No itchy, nasty re-growth or ingrown hairs.

Common Myths

Is it only for women?

Nope, no sireee, men can also use laser hair removal anywhere on their body. If you got hair they can zap it off.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser treatments are only approved by the FDA for “permanent hair reduction” NOT “permanent hair removal”. This simply means that some re-growth is to be expected.  Some people will be not see any hair re-growth for years, it really depends on the individual hair type. It is not a totally permanent hair-removal solution for most consumers. Some laser treatments are not effective for light color hair and dark skin color, though reduction of hair can be expected.

Can you get cancer from laser hair removal? As of now, no research has suggested any link between hair removal lasers and cancer, but there are some risks involved like redness, scarring and discoloration in the treated area. If a patient experiences some irritation after a laser session, several remedies can help soothe the treated area. (source: foxnews.com)

How to Select the Right Treatment

When you decide to go for lazer hair removal it can feel like a big step. It’s pricey, it’s new and it’s unfamiliar. This can make the whole thing feel a bit scary. Well here are a few things to consider when you’re deciding where to get in done.

Comfort

Look for a machine that helps to minimize the heat of the energy level and the impact it has on the skin & hair during the treatment. More expensive and high-end machines will have different proprietary technologies (such as a cooling tip) to make the treatment more comfortable. When you call up a place, if they can’t answer basic questions like this then don’t go there. If anyone is going to be waving a lazer around capable of burning your follicles off you want them to really know their trade.

Older and less expensive machines often do not have an automatic cooling tip and less stable energy current, compared to the newer machines.

Safety:

Ask how old the machine is, as if it is FDA approved. Ask the brand and model of the machine and have a Google. Again, if the treatment place can’t answer your questions just don’t give them your money. You got options.

Efficacy:

Have a consultation before embarking on any treatment. Every person’s hairy situation is unique. Some machines are effective on the first treatment while some machines require 3-6 treatments to see results.  Select a center that is appropriate for your unique situation.

Flexibility:

Hair removal treatment is a mix of using different technologies to provide the best results for different hair and skin color.  A good machine should take into consideration

• Skin type (6 types of skin color that range from light to dark)

• Hair type (hair color)

Cost:

The cost varies depending on the machine and section being treated.  It can be as low as a RMB 500/section/treatment.  Don’t go for a single session to save money, go and ask if there is a promotion or if you get a discount for buying in bulk. You are looking at needing at least 3 sessions minimum.

TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES

If this is your first time doing semi-permanent hair removal, please note the different technologies that are present now that can get you the desired effect.  Depending on your hair and skin color, one or more or the below technologies maybe needed to achieve desirable results.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) This is an older treatment form and hair re-grows 2-3 years from the treatment. Hair loss can be achieved from this in 9-12 treatments and is still widely used in China due to its affordability of the machine and cost per treatment.

Nd: YAG laser  This hair removal is the newest form of laser hair removal. " Nd" stands for Neodymium, and " YAG" stands for yttrium aluminum garnet. The Nd:YAG laser can be used for effective hair removal by all types of patients, including those who have tanned and dark skin. Large areas of the body can be treated quickly with this type of laser. There may be slightly more discomfort with the Nd:YAG laser than with other laser hair removal machines.

Diode laser hair removal system involves a beam of concentrated light and heat that is directed into the hair follicles, and therefore to the melanin contained in them. The pigment absorbs the laser energy and is destroyed, inhibiting hair growth in the affected hair follicles. The laser energy is directed at these follicles while simultaneously protecting the surrounding skin from harm.  This is one of the most effective and standard technologies for high-end centers.  Energy level can be adjusted for all skin types.

Ruby Laser is the original and first system. Melanin in the skin absorbs the Ruby laser very effectively, and this laser - in comparison to other lasers - is a good choice for lighter or finer hair. The Ruby laser should not be used for hair removal on darker or tanned skin. The Ruby laser has been used and tested widely. It causes direct, selective damage to follicles while preserving the integrity of skin. The delay between pulses with the Ruby laser is designed to provide more comfort for the patient; the faster the laser pulse, the more discomfort for the patient.

Alexandrite laser hair removal technique is the fastest lasers for hair removal. This laser is appropriate for quick treatment on parts of the body with large surface areas, and is most effective on patients with lighter to olive-colored skin. The Alexandrite laser is one of the most frequently-used lasers for hair removal in western countries.

Melanin in the hair follicles absorbs the Alexandrite laser light very well and selectively. The pulses of the laser are rapid, which may mean more discomfort for the patient. The tradeoff, here, is faster treatment: a patient's back, for instance, can be completely treated in 30 minutes or less. This laser hair removal system often delivers permanent results. When and if hair does grow back, the Alexandrite laser reduces the number, thickness, and darkness of the treated hair.

Tips for Laser Treatment

Before going for your treatment, here are some tips you should consider:

1. Keep direct sun exposure at a minimum (including tanning beds) before and after the treatment, 4 weeks before and after treatment.

2. Shave a day before your appointment. Don’t be too bald or too hairy, as the machine needs to detect hair. No wax or Nair, 3 to 4 weeks before going in for the first treatment.

3. Results are not achieved upon the first appointment, set your expectations right by allowing at a minimum 3 treatments to see any noticeable difference.

4. Depending on where you want to be treated, allow each treatment time between 20-60 minutes (depending on the area and machine)

5. Prominent results can be seen after 3 months
