Why Donghu Lu is Hotter than Ever

Donghu Road has always been a hot spot for expats and young professionals, but it seems like now more than ever, the street is bustling with cool new bars and restaurants. Here’s some of what’s making Donghu Lu the place to be these days.  



New Openings


Beverly



Beverly is a newly opened lounge bar right upstairs from its sister venue, Le Baron. But where Le Baron is known for its red glow, Beverly has decided to go pink, like REALLY pink. The drinks are fantastic and their terrace is perfect for watching all the shenanigans below.

Peet’s Cafe



Peet’s has opened their very first store outside of the US right here on Donghu Road. The founder (yes, Peet) was a coffee and tea expert and he went on to consult with several high-end and well-known coffee retailers globally. Most notably, he was approached by a group of entrepreneurs in 1971 who asked him to supply them with roasted coffee beans for their new venture in Seattle… Starbucks. Even Bush, Clinton and Obama are admitted Peet’s fans.

Madison Kitchen



Madison Kitchen is finally back  with a new spot on Donghu. They’re still offering many of the food options that made them so popular at their previous location.

Restaurants


Shanghai Brewery



Shanghai Brewery is one of the most steadily buzzing spots along this street. They offer a solid selection of craft beers, along with new drinks every two weeks. Their weekday happy hour from 3pm to 8pm is hard to beat.

Gemma



Gemma is an Italian handmade pizza shop with two floors, the first floor has bar area, dining area and wine cellar. The second floor is used for holding private parties and it has semi-open kitchen. Besides pizza they also have Italian beer and ice cream.

The Parrot



The Parrot is well-known for their funky décor (which includes parrot patterns all over the place in every color you can imagine). It’s a tropical, South American vibe with a respectable food menu, great drinks and usually a rollicking late-night crowd.

elEfante




A Spanish restaurant with creative design and awesome food. Their menu changes monthly so you can always expect something new. Make a reservation before you go though! This place gets busy.

LA VINOTECA TORRES



LA VINOTECA TORRES is a bar that opened right inside elEfante. It’s designed like a huge wine cellar and you can enjoy any wine you’d like here.

Yakiniku Bar



If you are a huge fan of meat, this place is a perfect choice! They only sell the best Australia beef along with good stiff drinks.

Bars


Le Baron



Do we really have to explain Le Baron? Coming from Paris, it’s the fifth store in Shanghai, the founder, André Saraiva is the creative director of the fashion magazine《L’Officiel Hommes》. Red lights and a mirror room are their unique features.

Craft



Hidden in a small alley, Craft is designed like a factory. Stylish paintings on the wall were all painted by the founder himself. Also, their bartenders are from Spain, Philippines and America, you can choose you favorite style. Every Wednesday, they have live DJ show and many kinds of events like LGBT parties and cocktail events.

BONOBO



Like its sister venue, Monkey Champagne, BONOBO has fun colorful design. ‘The public’ bartender team makes special cocktails and they even have a Korean chef cooking meals.

Brew Bear



Although they officially offer 200 different kinds of beers, if you add the ones in stock, the weekly changing beers, the new purchases, it’s actually probably somewhere around 1000. You can definitely find your favorite drink here and there’s perfect outdoor seating as well.

Jenny’s Blue Bar



Jenny’s Blue Bar opened in 1999. Designed like a warm home, the owner is very welcoming. Every day from 4pm to 8pm is their happy hour, a great little gem along the street to grab a drink with friends.

Pop Up Stores  

 

BUCO



Famous Italian ice cream brand founded by Salvatore Naselli. It only sells limited kinds of flavors: fig, blueberry, pistachio, bacio, chocolate and stracciatella.

Happy Clay



A Japanese-style handmade clay shop. Every clay product is unique and delicate and it will normally take three or four days to make one.
