New Opening: Small Eats and Big Wines at QV

2017-11-20 ShanghaiWOWeng

Restaurants in Shanghai (or the city itself for that matter) have a tendency to be overdesigned, leading to a bit of sensory overload from time to time. Occasionally you just need to find a quiet, dark place to sit down with a nice glass of wine and a snack to chill the hell out. QV is that place; and since you will be wanting to return again and often, we are happy to report that the prices, as with any location that the Popolo Group puts their stamp on, are fair.

Functional and attractive furnishings in a dimly lit, black-walled dining room

That’s not to say that they didn’t put thought into the venue, but it's more along the lines of “let’s do less and see how people react to it.” QV, I like you just the way you are.

This iron wine wall makes the wine selection a focal point

The wine list spans the new and old world with a heavy emphasis on French and Italian bottles. Red, white and sparkling are available from RMB 50-80 by the glass (RMB 40 to RMB 65 at happy hour). You can choose from a variety in the RMB 220 – RMB 400 range or go as rich as RMB 1440 for a bottle of Champagne Laurent Perrier, Cuvee Rose Brut. The list is easy to navigate, but do not hesitate to ask for recommendations from their very capable manager, Phillipe.

More than enough foie gras for a small group as a starter

While primarily a wine bar, there is a tasty and well-curated menu of treats by their Italian chef. The foie gras served with homemade chutney is smooth and delicious at a surprisingly economical RMB 46 per order. Also expect high quality and good value planks of meat and cheese here. It’s what Popolo is known for.

Mixed charcuterie (RMB 88) and cheese planks (RMB 98)

Octopus is difficult to get right, and we were impressed with the tenderness of their grilled version. It is marinated with sour paprika, ginger and extra virgin olive oil and served with a yummy celery and grapefruit chutney. It is little bit sweet, a little bit bitter, and completely delicious.

The black tiger prawn is coated in a crunchy walnut puree (RMB 58) and served in a martini glass full of broccoli cream while fried selection is pretty classic: arancini di riso (RMB 38), cod brandade (RMB 42) and eggplant balls (RMB 34). We like the cheesy arancini the best.

Burrata (RMB 50) and chef marinated salmon (RMB 42)

While we would have liked our burrata a bit creamier, we cannot be mad about that dollop of caviar on top. The salmon is marinated for 24 hours and tastes great with the juicy slices of orange served alongside. If you are a bit hungry, both the Duck in Autumn and scallops are very nice plates of well-cooked food.

A gorgeous sear on those scallops (RMB 62) with a pretty arrangement of veg

Slow cooked duck, pomegranate sauce and cannellini puree (RMB 48)

To finish, a fresh raspberry tart (RMB 25) really steals the show and they do a creamy, satisfying tiramisu (RMB 36), but we wanted ours a bit boozier. Never mind, just order more wine.

Basically, QV is a place we want to drink, nibble, and see friends at. The laid-back atmosphere, good prices and quality of the food and wine along with complete lack of pretension make for a wine bar where you can enjoy nice things without trying too hard or spending too much.
