Future of Health & Fitness Here? Bio Hack Your Body with DNAFit

2017-11-24 ShanghaiWOWeng

Lately Shanghai has been doing a bit of a shift, from nightlife-centric to fitness-centric. Boutique studios are now mushrooming around town with all the latest fitness crazes and WeChat groups allow a closer bond for fitness enthusiasts with community workouts and challenges going on constantly.

It all boils down to fitness providers promising a better and fitter you, and there is always a market with people like myself who want results fast and with minimal effort.

When DNAFit made it’s way into my WeChat, I was intrigued.

Have I been focusing my effort on the wrong exercises?

Can I eat my way to losing/shedding weight?

Are people who are gorgeously ripped genetically engineered that way?

After making some calls, I have made the first appointment with JP Neal from DNAFit Shanghai, to put some of my questions to rest.

What can I learn from my genetic test?

In a nutshell, the genetic test is targeted at 45 of both your nutrition and fitness genes. You can learn about your nutritional genes and finally find a diet that best fits you according to your DNA. You can also learn about your fitness genes and find the best way to train according to your genetic fitness results. No more wasting time on fad diets and exercises that won’t give you results!

What will I learn about my nutrition needs?

Nutritionally, our test will provide you with an optimal meal plan (no more fad diets!) and it will show your results to individual sensitivities of things such as carbs, fats, salt, alcohol, caffeine, etc… It also provides detailed information of your vitamin and micronutrient needs as well as your detox ability, lactose (in)tolerance and pre-distribution to gluten - all so you can make the best, everyday dietary choices according to your personal DNA.

If we already know about certain food sensitivities, why is it important to get them retested?

Other than officially confirming your suspicions, your food sensitivity results will enable you to tweak your diet to specifically target foods and nutrients that will help you better lose fat and maintain your weight, as well as avoid foods that hinder your dieting efforts. Once you have actual confirmation, it enables you to focus more on the healthy aspects of your diet and to stick with it because it’s in your DNA - and that isn’t going to change for the rest of your life.

If I already eat healthy, why is this test important?

“Eating healthy” means different things to different people. For example, if you have a very low sensitivity to carbs and you subscribe to a no/low-carb diet, you might be missing out on healthy, complex carbs your body needs for fuel and energy. You could be sabotaging yourself because you are following a diet made for highly carb-sensitive people! This test will let you know what sensitivities you have and what nutrients you need, in order to help you create a balanced diet specifically for YOU and not for just any ‘average’ person.

Can I actually lose weight eating the foods I am genetically engineered to eat?

Absolutely! By consuming better food and nutrients you are more genetically suited to process (and avoiding the ones you aren’t), it will help your entire digestive tract and nervous system work more efficiently and will provide you with overall better health in all aspects of your diet and fitness.

How does the DNA test help in determining fitness tolerance?

On the fitness side, in order to provide you with the best training results possible, this test will equip you with power/endurance results for targeted training exercises. It’ll let you know if you belong on that treadmill or if you’re better suited to power-based HIIT training. It will also provide you with your injury risk, recovery speed and post-workout nutrition results to help create an optimal training plan targeted at your personal DNA so there’s no more guessing game in the gym as to what will work for you. Every minute of your workout can be focused on what works for YOU – providing you with more efficient training for much better results.

Is DNAFit just for testing? How will I maintain my fitness and nutrition goals?

We have a host of DNAFit Partners in the fitness industry here in Shanghai (Golden Gloves Boxing, Warzone BJJ, Iron Dragon Crossfit, etc…) and the list is growing fast! We are working with them to provide our clients with different fitness choices to help them get (and stay) active. Most of them have a free membership included in price so as soon as you get your fitness results, you can put them to work!

We also work with great health food companies like gre3n and Farmhouse Juice to provide discounts on their great products and we’re talking with some great health food/meal companies to develop meals that fit into our DNAFit nutritional requirements so all our clients have an immediate option to purchase meal plans that fit their optimal diet plans. We also have a healthy cookbook in the works that will enable our customers to cook specific meals based on their DNAFit optimal meal plan from ingredients found locally here in China.

Do you have a team of nutritionists to consult the data?

Here in Shanghai, we have a wellness community strategy of what I call the ‘Triangle of Power.’ The DNAFit test is for testing your genetics and providing you with a genetic blueprint of suggestions based on your results. We then partner with fitness centers to help you achieve your fitness goals and we partner with nutritional partners to help you achieve your nutrition goals. We have local nutritionists that have taken the test themselves (and loved the results!) and are interested in working with us to outsource their knowledge to help our customers with their nutritional results, so this is quite helpful and we are always looking to add more as we rapidly expand in the market.

Do you have a team of fitness experts to consult the data?

Another part of our Triangle of Power is the fitness centers we partner with here in Shanghai as well as all the personal trainers that have taken our training course to become DNAFit Certified Trainers. These personal trainers have all had their own tests done and have taken a course with our Director of Education & Training to become certified trainers that can consult their clients on their fitness results as well as create and guide them through a targeted, 90-day training plan based on those results. We are adding more PT’s every week as they see the obvious benefits and advantages to having their own genetic test done to better understand their body and enhance their profession by helping DNAFit clients.

I have done meal plans, calorie-counted; spin class, swimming, yoga and the results have been minimal. What is there to lose except everything to gain?

Previously the fitness routine that got the maximum result was cardio and swimming. But as the years added up, the weight became harder to shed off. But as I see more of a plateau versus weight loss, I decided to take the plunge and try this.

What did I learn after taking the test?  Some results validated my earlier suspicions such as my carbohydrate sensitivities, and a PPARG gene (Activity Gene) that indicates I need activity to stay in shape. It also surprises me, as a lover of cheese, that I am lactose intolerant. This was my 'aha' moment since I had such mild symptoms but never fully realizing it was due to lactose intolerance.

The fitness recommendation also shows the types of exercises that will suit my body best ( more power and high intensity) which is drastically different than what I was used to.

How does this all fare? Well, you will have to wait and see. With a baby on the way, let’s see if DNAFit can get me that Bikini Beach Body for August 2018.
