The Best Day Trips You Can Take Near Shanghai

2017-11-26 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

When it comes to planning a day trip out of Shanghai it's pretty easy to get stuck in the ‘Hangzhou, Suzhou’ groove. Whilst the west lake is completely fabulous, it’s nice to shake it up every now and then and try out a few different adventures.

I met up with Travel expert Ralena from Rale on the Road (RR) to get her opinion on the best one-day getaways from Shanghai.

Longjing Tea Plantations

Get lost in the stunning hills of the tea plantations! RR recommendation: hike from one tea village to another (1.5-2hrs easy hike) and discover the stunning views from the peaks of the hills while walking between the rows of green tea. Reward yourself after hiking by tasting the delicious green tea in one of the tea houses in the nearby village before heading back to Shanghai.

Time to get there: 1hr by train + public bus or taxi for 30min.

Approx cost:  RMB 185 train for a return ticket + RMB 60 local transportation (in taxi)

Wuzhen Water Town

Wuzhen is a very beautiful and vast water town, with a romantic landscape. On top of the numerous canals and bridges there are also plenty of interesting museums such as the Chinese wedding museum or, the rather gruesome and defiantly not romantic, foot binding museum. RR recommendation: take a late bus back to Shanghai in order to be able to see the city by night as it lights up beautifully.

Time to get there: 2hrs by bus

Approx cost: RMB 104 return ticket

Entrance ticket: RMB 120/150

Tongli Water Town

Tongli is another great place in the water town competition, it’s much calmer and quieter than many of the others. It’s much less crowded, even on weekends. It is a great example of a traditional Chinese water town with the round bridges, little canals and narrow walk-ways.

Time to get there: 1.5hrs by bus

Approx cost: RMB 130

Chongming Island

It might not seem an interesting destination at a first sight but Chongming has actually quite a few interesting spots. Our favorite ones are: the beautiful garden at Mount Jin’ao and the peaceful Wetland Park and Bird Migration Reserve, where more than 290 different species of birds can be spotted. It is a pleasant walk or bike ride along the water areas, bridges, gardens, etc. It can be a great spot to see the sunset.

Time to get there: 1 hr by bus or ferry + 1hr to get to the bus stop or the ferry port from downtown Sh.

Approx. cost: RMB 30 public transport return + RMB 80-200 taxi on the island depending on what you’re visiting.

So there you have it! 4 great day trip locations that are a little unusual. If you are looking for more information on these trips then get in touch with Ralena. She plans private 1 day trips for the tiny fee of RMB 100, so if you’re looking for a no hassle travel experience, she is your girl.

Rale on the Road also helps make boutique travel arrangements so that you can have your dream trip without any of the stress or worry of a usual off-the-beaten-path trip. Rale on the Road is the perfect way to have the dream trip organized for you so you can be off on your merry way.
