Big List of Stupid Sh*t in 2017

2017-11-29 ShanghaiWOWeng

2017 is coming to a close, and it’s been a hell of a year. Out in the West, politics went completely crazy and sexual predators were finally taken to task en masse. Here in Shanghai though, we've had our own craziness, albeit a little less dramtic. Here's some of the stupid sh*t that we're looking back on from a long year.

1. Gold Bike Share

Gold bike share was a sweet idea, but it launched in the height of summer and all men were at risk of burning their balls off.

2. Death Tea

Not that we have a thing against tea, but creating a Death Tea brand just to ride on the popularity of Hey Tea… come on guys…

3. Bed Share

Not surprised this one closed down fast, considering it was dirtier than your local love motel.

4. Umbrella share

Again, like bed shares, this took less than one rainy day for the idea to go bust.

6. Pop up stores overload

Pop up stores are fun, but when you hear news of brands with their “pop up” every week, it can be a bit of an overload. Wrestling in line isn’t our idea of fun.

7. Fidget Spinners

DUMB. This was mostly a western fad in 2017, but the Shanghai fake markets were absolutely flooded with them as well.

8. Employee-less stores

The employee-free store was great until it got shut down for overheating. Sure this idea will work soon enough, but for now, it's not a lot of fun spending 30 minutes registering and reading instructions so you can buy a gatorade.

9. Metro picnic

We can't laugh too hard, after all, this could've happened to any drunken group of expats. This group caught some serious online heat for their impromptu metro picnic.

10. VPN rumors

They're banned, they're not banned, they work, they're not working. 2017 gave us VPN rumor headaches way too many times.

11. Expensive Shaved Ice

RMB 60 for a cup of shaved ice?

12. STORM Festival Cancelled Due to Storm

We had a ton of EDM festivals this year, but the one to take the cake is the cancellation of STORM festival due to... yes, a storm. You'd think they might've planned for that possibility at an outdoor festival, or at least given refunds.

13. Long lines & Scalpers

Hey Tea and Lady M gave us neverending lines that sprawled for so far they became their own ecosystems.

14. Halloween Hot Pot

Actually this wasn't dumb, it was amazing... it IS amazing. It still has all of its halloween decorations up a month after the holiday.

15. Fake UV

If you're going to copy something, maybe be a little more low key about it. This place got universally (rightfully) shit on not only for ripping off UV, but for charging even higher prices than the real restaurant.

16. Bike Shares Goes Bankrupt

We should say bike shares in general were stupid this year, but even more stupid: these companies all seeming to go bust at once and not being able to refund user deposits.
