Three New Bars to Hit Up This Month

2017-11-30 ShanghaiWOWeng

November has had pretty strong bar game with a few solid contenders opening their doors. We selected our favorite three; here’s who they are and why you should be drinking there.

Kru

We loooved Kru, a wine bar of casual perfection. They have taken inspiration from winery tasting rooms by using arched cellar windows and heaps of woodwork. Their goal was to create a unique spin on a wine bar known for good food and red wine at a reasonable and “friendly” price point, and oh boy did they succeed.

The smoked sea bass carpaccio has a nice balance of smoky and fresh flavors from the rocket, courgette, orange and lime zest, this dish sticks out as a real winner because of the excellent seasoning.

Kru is a wine bar, so obviously it’s heavy on the wines, you can get red, white and sparkling by the glass. They are also going to be dabbling in wine based cocktails which sound like a very very fun and delicious way to get a head ache.

Address: Room 102,199 Hengshan Lu, Yongping Lane (near Yongjia Lu)

Opening times: Daily, 1pm to 2pm

Tel: 021 5456 5913

QV

We are going wine bar heavy with our picks this month but QV is very different from Kru. QV is a little, dark, wine filled, bolt hole where you can snuggle up with your mates/a date and polish off a good bottle of red and a tasty snack. Located in the centre of Jing An District it’s the wine bar the area has been waiting for.

The charcuterie boards and cheese planks are to die for. Great selections at a really reasonable price point. If you’re with a group of friends we recommend one of each to nibble on throughout your night.

Let’s get down to the wine. The wine list spans the new and old world with a heavy emphasis on French and Italian bottles. Red, white and sparkling are available from RMB 50 to RMB 80 by the glass (they have good happy hour deals too). You can choose from a variety of bottles in the RMB 220 – RMB 400 range or go mad and grab a RMB 1440 bottle of the Champagne Laurent Perrier, Cuvee Rose Brut. (Yes please.)

Address: 343 Jiaozhou Lu (near Wuding Lu)

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 4pm to late

Tel: 021 6256 5005

Club 3 1/3

This is our personal favourite new bar ever. Well maybe not ever, but it’s up there. 3 1/3 is a sleek cocktail lounge by the bund that has a great chilled out vibe. New York architect and designer, Michael Hsieh, has created a beautiful vintage inspired space with sleek touches that reminds us of a London Jazz bar. It’s all turquoise velvets and dim lighting, the type that makes everyone 10% more attractive (great for dates).

They serve fantastic snacky bar food, like individual nachos made up of a bold mix of spicy Sichuan and Mexican flavors. As well as slightly heavier options like pork and chicken sliders in a variety of flavours.

The signature cocktails are around the RMB 100 mark and are really worth it. But my favorite of all the food and drink options is the Grey Goose and Caviar combo.  9 shots of Grey Goose and 30g of black pearl caviar served as the classiest version of a ‘slammer’ ever, it's a sure fire way to get the party started.

Address: Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, Bund No 3, 1/F

Opening times: Mon to Thurs, 8pm to 3am; Fri & Sat, 8pm to 4am

Tel: 021 6312 0931
