Newly Opened: Eat, Drink, Work, Repeat at CommBiz

2017-11-30 ShanghaiWOWeng

Yongping Lane is fast becoming a one stop destination for all our needs with the addition of social business club (they do not use the phrase cospace FYI), CommBiz. While they are still working out the details of all their membership plans, but they have office spaces ready to go and will also do a hot desk type plan. The dining space and bar area is designed to provide for the needs of the hip urban professional.

The airy and well lit dining room will also be used for movie events

The short menu is in place from now until after Christmas, after which they will keep some best sellers and add sets. Their chef likes to play with Chinese and Western flavors and has a strong preference for mushrooms, which are featured often on the menu. Shrimp and orange salad is a refreshing start to the meal. We enjoyed the large variety of lettuce leaves and herbs as well as the cumin in the dressing.  The oven roasted tomatoes were also a nice touch.

Croque Madame (RMB 68) with mozzarella &emmental cheese, ham, egg, béchamel sauce

The Croque Madame paired makes for a tasty and filling midday meal. Add the completely delicious CommBiz fries if you are feeling especially hungry. We literally asked our dining companions, several times, “How are these fries so good?” They should probably add mussels or steak frites to their new menu to utilize their amazing fries.

The Sautéed Mushroom dish is a very interesting use of fungi. Basically long shreds of mushrooms are combined with a freshly made mayonnaise, oyster mushrooms and chives. There’s also more yummy oven roasted cherry tomatoes and parmesan shreds. Think of the mushrooms as a pasta substitution; perfect for low carb eating.

Seared Wagyu beef with Chinese style risotto (RMB 98)

A seared Wagyu beef with Chinese style risotto has an odd coupling of ingredients that melds together surprisingly well. The rice is flavored with Shaoxing wine and soy sauce and cheese is replaced with furu (fermented tofu). The beef could be tenderer, but the risotto is a great texture. XO sauce, dried scallops, air-dried ham and chili jazz up a shrimp and angel hair pasta.

The roasted pork is a more standard dish with the pairing of pork and pineapple, but the crisp exterior on the fairly lean cut of pork is quite enjoyable.

Seasonal fruit gratin with saboyon (RMB 38) is a light final course

They have a both signature and classic drinks and the “workaholic & alcoholic “portion of the menu is quite fun. These selections are perfect for moments when you need to simultaneously chill out and meet a deadline while hot desking.

Whiskey espresso (RMB 58) perks up your coffee break with a hot of Glenfarclas 105 and hazelnut liquor.

Coffee de Flora (RMB 58) is a gently alcoholic treat featuring violet liquor and rose syrup

But dining is just a portion of what they do at CommBiz. It is primarily a work space and we were impressed by our peak around. High ceilings and trendy lighting will keep you from feeling trapped at work like an office monkey.

In addition to work areas for rent, they have conference areas for all your business needs.

For the truly efficient social business club member, combine your morning commute with exercise. You don’t have to worry about looking good for that next meeting, because they have amazing shower facilities.

We look forward to finding out their fees, because this seems like a great place to get stuff done. There is the added member benefit of a 20% discount for gold and black members or a 10% discount, for general members off all F&B, which is quite enticing. Until then we will happily pop in for lunch or dinner when in the neighborhood. And let’s be honest, we will be back for those fries.
