7 European Christmas Foods & Where to Find Them in Shanghai

2017-12-05 ShanghaiWOWeng

Most countries have their own take on Christmas, including specific foods they like to eat around this time of year. Finding your nations preferred Christmas nibbles can be a little tricky, so we put together a list of a few Christmas delicacies from around Europe and where you can find them in Shanghai.

Italy – Panettone

This traditional yeasted cake is like a massive airy muffin. Due to the yeast, these must be made by a skilled baker using a variety of techniques to prevent it from collapsing, and only then are we able to enjoy this delicious holiday treat.

RMB 45

(The great thing about getting your panettone from SYB is that not only is it delicious, but you’re also supporting a great cause. SYB is a charity that supports disadvantaged youngsters and helps train them in western bakery techniques.)

England – Pigs in Blankets

RMB 80 for the sausage and bacon combo

These are NOT the same as American pigs in blankets (which if you like you can buy at The Rooster). These little parcels of joy are pure English, they’re mini sausages wrapped in streaky bacon and baked in the oven! That’s pork wrapped in pork. Whilst you can’t buy the pigs pre-wrapped in blankets, you can get the mini sausages and Streaky bacon from Butler & White's.

Minced Pies

RMB 18 each

Mince pies are a funny little English thing, made of mincemeat, which is vegetarian. Mincemeat is essentially an ancient mixture of dried fruits, ground almonds and spices, sugar and fat, almost certainly brought back to England from the Middle East by Crusaders.

France – Buche De Noel

Oysters and Foie Gras

RMB 58 for 60g

Oysters and Foie Gras may seem like an odd combo for some of us but in France it’s a traditional Christmas day starter.  You can pick your foie gras from La Maison Traiteur and pick up your oysters at Little Catch!

Spain – Iberico Jamón

In Spain, cured meats and cheese are often served as a starter along with fish and langousintes. You can find Jamón and a selection of Spanish cheese on fields! This is a grocery delivery service which means you can have your favorite festive treats delivered to your door step.

Germany - Stollen

This traditional German Christmas bread is generously dusted with confectionary sugar and should be eaten hot out of the oven, slathered in butter. It’s filled with dried fruits macerated in rum or brandy, the perfect way to help keep you warm on a cold winter’s day.
