December is probably best known for cold temps, Christmas and New Years Eve, but wait… there’s so much more! Especially living in Shanghai, there’s never a lack of fun ways to spend your free time. Here are 28 fantastic things to do this month, aside from the obvious holiday celebrations.

 

Mingzhu Art Museum Exhibition | Tadao Ando: Leading




When: December 30th, 2017 – May 20th, 2018

Where: 8/F, Xinghua International Mall, No. 120 6 Hongjing Lu

Born in Osaka in 1941, Tadao Ando has never has a formal education. Adopting his own unique style to architecture, he is known to be one of the most influential architects arpimd, whose works can be seen everywhere including the Cong Bai music video by Fish Leong.


[PSA Exhibition] Bijoux en jeu

 


When: December 14th, 2017 – March 4th 2018

Where: 1/F, 200 Hua Yuan Gang Lu

How Much: Free

 

Using contemporary designs from Lausanne, Switzerland and curated by the mudac museum, the team of 35 designers used almost 300 accessories to display the beauty of 1960s Switzerland. The exhibition was previously in Barcelona, Spain and Basel, Switzerland, before making its 3rd pit stop on its world tour right here in Shanghai.

 

Xiang Jing Exhibition

 


When: December 12th, 2017 – February 25th, 2018

Where: Long Museum

How Much: To be confirmed

 

Artist Xiang Jing will be showcasing her art pieces at the Long Museum this December until the end of February. Showcasing works from her 21-year career, learn more about her and her work through her 100-odd pieces in the 3,600sqm exhibition area.

 

Between Heaven and Man: Cai Zhisong Solo Exhibition

 


When: November 26th,  2017 – January 4th, 2018 (Closed every Monday)

Where: Minsheng Art Museum, 1929 Shibo Da Dao

How Much: RMB 30

 

Offering up 9 sets and 18 art works, including film footage and information, this exhibition will cover 4 different series of his sculptures, including the “my country”, “rose”, “cloud” and his latest 2016 – 2017 collection, “my hometown” series.

 

HELLO, MY NAME IS PAUL SMITH Pink Party

 


When: December 10th, 2017

Where: Modern Art Museum

2017 Shanghai Xintiandi Christmas Market

Wonder how Christmas will be look in Xintiandi this year? From November 23rd onwards, they’ve had a one-of-a-kind crystal and interactive Christmas tree on display, that’s bound to tingle all your senses.

 

[PSA Exhibition] Emerging Curators Project 2017

 


When: November 25th, 2017 – 9 March 2018

Where: 5/F, Power Station of Art | 1/F, Shanghai Swatch Peace Hotel Art Centre Exhibition Hall

How Much: Free

 

The fourth phase of the Emerging Curators Project, the project officially started in May and following 2 months of submissions and 66 drafts, the top 10 underwent a grueling interview process in July with a panel featuring Chris Dercon, Ding Yi, Fei Da Wei, Feng Yuan, Gong Yan, Hou Hanru, Mark Wigly and guest judge, René Lorenceau. The final 3 then underwent a 4-month long process of editing and materializing their ideas for the final exhibition, which is up from November 24th 2017 until March 9th 2018 at the Power Station of Art and Shanghai Swatch Peace Hotel Art Centre Exhibition Hall.

 

Ruyi To Be Found Everywhere In Life: Long Museum Exhibition of Chinese Ruyi and Porcelain

 


When: October 1st, 2017 – March 31st, 2018

Where: Long Museum (Pudong)

Gain a deeper understanding of the phrase “Ruyi;” a commonly-used phrase in Chinese festive greetings, through 6 Ruyi items, 13 pieces of porcelain, 1 painting, 1 brocade and 1 brush as well as complementing images and information.

The 4 main themes – T – Topology, H – Heterogeneity, I – Infrastructure, S – Shanghai UrbanSample, centers on the main theme of ‘thisCONNECTION.’ Using space, culture and technology, the 12 special exhibitions will feature various public administration buildings exploring the concept of architecture and space. Interstitial Hong Kong: Exploring the small and marginal landscapes of high density urbanism

 


When: October 28th, 2017 – January 5th, 2018, Daily 9:00am – 6:00pm

Where: University of Hong Kong Shanghai Study Centre

How Much: Free

 

By the Master in Landscape Architecture course in the University of Hong Kong, students in the course will be featuring their works at this exhibition. Understanding, proposing solutions and improvements to space constraint issues in Hong Kong, explore new ways in approaching existing space limitation issues at the exhibition.  

 

“Why New York” – Exhibition by Chen Danqing, Ma Kelu, Feng Lianghong

 


When: November 1st, 2017 – January 7th, 2018

By Chen Danqing, Ma Kelu and Feng Lianghong, the exhibition seeks to improve upon the past 3 ones, breaking boundaries and showcasing a new side of art.


VESSEL | Kohei Nawa

 


When: November 3rd, 2017 – January 7th, 2018

The exhibition will feature a 24m long “Vessel” exhibit, which is developed by Kohei Nawa and Damian Jarrett. Consisting of 20 individual sculptures and a 24m long base, it will include different sound effects and be the centerpiece for this exhibition.

Back for the second time, have a German Christmas this December at the Jing’an Christkindlmark, with great Christmas delights including chestnuts, roasted apples, sweet wine, rum, roasted almonds, sausages and more.   

 

Deep Sea Miracles – Shanghai Stop

The first ocean biodiversity themed exhibition, the country-wide exhibition will make its way to Shanghai from 25 November 2017 – 10 January 2018. LA LA LAND In Concert

The Last of the Mohicans – Alexandro Querevalu

French Musical “Mozart, l'opéra rock”

Kickstarted in September 2009 in Paris, the critically acclaimed musical incorporates both classical and modern elements in telling the life of Wolfgang Mozart. Following the musical’s album launch, it earned its position on the French music billboard for 20 weeks and a large fan base.

A classic Christmas story, the ballet largely follows the story of the Nutcracker and the Mouse King and made its maiden experience on Christmas at the Shanghai Grand Theater back in 2010. Celebrate all things Christmas with this classic tale and be blown away by the crew’s use of magic tricks, in spicing up the show.  

 

“Swan Lake” by the Royal Russian Ballet

Where: Oriental Art Centre – Performance Hall

Another classic tale, the ballet group has previously produced stars like Maya Plisetskaya. Telling the story of Odette, a princess turned swan, be charmed by the Russian Ballet rendition of the classic tale this Christmas at the Oriental Art Centre.
