The Best Facials Around Town

2017-12-10 ShanghaiWOWeng

Nothing beats pampering yourself, and seriously nothing beats pampering yourself with a facial. But when you’re shopping around trying to figure out where to go it can be tough to choose. So I did some research and reached out to some Shanghai spas and beauty clinics and have compiled a list of my three favorite treatments available right now.

Subconscious Day Spa

Address: 183 Fumin Lu

Treatment: Modeling Complex Care Treatment

Duration: 90 minutes

Price: RMB 1580 for non-member

           RMB 880 for VIP member

I went to the Fumin Lu branch of Subconscious Day Spa to check out their facilities and try their Modeling Complex Care treatment. The facilities are excellent, you are greeted by smiling staff from the minute you walk in the door. I sat quietly in their waiting area, sipping green tea and waiting for my room to become available.

The room itself was clean, spacious and relaxing. My beautician was kind and smiling and made sure I was comfortable.

They begin the facial by cleansing the skin and then doing a sculpting massage before they then apply ‘problem solvers.’ This is different for everyone and tailor-made to your skin.

That’s me under there…

This is when it gets weird but amazing. They begin to apply a thermal mask. For this, they cover your eye lids and mouth with a fine gauze and then paint the mask over your entire face. The mask gets very, very hot and this helps to work the active ingredients into your skin. It also tightens, which helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkle. It was one of the most bizarre (yet pleasant) experiences of my whole life.

Once the mask had been removed my skin was pink from the heat but also soft and glowing. All of the fine lines around my eyes and mouth had gone and I looked healthy. I met up with friends later for dinner and went bare-skinned. I felt incredible!

Dragonfly

Address: LG2-47 Shanghai IFC, 8 century Avenue

Treatment: Venus V Shape Face Lifting

Duration: 60 minutes

Price: RMB 2180

Finding the Dragonfly Day Spa in the IFC shopping mall is a little stressful, I was late because it took me 5 minutes to work out LG2 means 'lower ground 2,' not 'floor 2' and malls are generally tough to find your way around anyway.

So I arrived stressed and flustered and was ushered straight into a treatment room. The room was beautiful, in fact, the whole facility was lovely. I felt like I was tip-toeing through a heavily-scented woodland rather than underground in a mall, sweaty and stressed.

The V-sculpt facial starts with a deep cleanse and then moves onto using the V-sculpt machine, which uses Diamond Polar (mp)2 technology to boost your skins collagen production. It basically felt like my skin was being gently electrocuted for 45 minutes. The beautician did half of my face and then got me to look in the mirror so I could compare. It was amazing. All the fine lines on the left side of my face had gone. My jaw line and cheek bones were defined and my double chin was gone. I looked like I had lost 15 pounds but it a healthy, glowy way.

This facial comes with a pretty high price tag but I would say it’s totally worth it. If you have a special occasion like a wedding, or Christmas, go and get your face v-sculpted and you won’t regret it.

Skin City 5.5

Address: 476 Dagu Lu

Treatment: Fresh O2 Oxygen + Mild Extractions + Sexy Lip Mask

Duration: 60 minutes + 15 minutes for extractions

Price: RMB 675 + RMB 75 (extractions) + RMB 60 (lip mask)

Skin City was the least glamorous of all the spas I went too, but after talking to the owner, Michael Chan, for 5 minutes I am 100% certain that it’s the best. He took one look at my face and quickly recommended the best facial for me.

I had the Fresh O2 Oxygen facial, which adds oxygen to your skin and helps to make you more radiant. ‘It’s great for dull winter skin, especially in Shanghai with this pollution!’ said Michael.

My favorite thing about getting a facial at Skin City was that you could add on extras to tailor the facial to your personal needs. So I added Mild extractions (to battle my black heads) and a Sex Lip mask (to battle my dry, cracked lips).

The whole process was carried out by a beautician that was knowledgeable, answered all of my questions and spoke amazing English. She gave me tips on how to take better care of my lips in the cold weather. Another selling point here: Skin City uses filtered sterile water and all of their equipment is for one time use. Hygiene Is something they take extremely seriously, which is quite comforting at a spa.

Skin City has less of a 'treat yourself' feel and more of a 'I need this' feel. I left pink faced and glowing with my problem areas tackled and I will 100% be going back.
