What to Expect on New Metro Line 17 and Extensions

In Shanghai, the current rail network consists of 15 lines and reaches 617km, making it a common mode of transport for many. By the end of this year, the government will be launching Line 17, a third phase of Line 9 and the Pujiang line. Here are some of the top sights to look out for along those routes.



Line 17, Shanghai Metro


Spanning over 35km, and with over 13 stops (6 are elevated and 7 underground), Line 17 mainly services people in the Qingpu area.



Train Stations: Hongqiao Railway Station (station for Line 2 and 10 as well), Zhu Guang Lu Station, Panlong Lu Station, Xujing Beicheng Station, Jiasong Zhong Lu Station, Zhaoxiang Station, Huijin Station, Qingpu Metro Station, Caoying Lu Station, Dianshan Lake Avenue Station, Zhujiajiao Station, Dongfang Lu Zhou Station


Progress: Line 17 is currently undergoing facilities and equipment testing.


Sights to look out for: 


Panlong Ancient Town




With over 300 years of history, Panlong Ancient Town survived World War II and is now home to around a dozen rice factories. It is also known for being one of the hubs for grain transportation in Shanghai, and is near the Panlong station.


Qingpu Museum



The main building mimics the look and feel of the Qingpu terrain, with the architecture and extension built to resemble a butterfly. The museum is near Huijin Lu Station.  


Qushui Park



With over 230 years of history, Qushui Park is one of the 5 'classic parks' in Shanghai. With 15% of the park made up of water, there's a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna species, giving visitors an unusually nature-emmersed park experience here.   


Bailian Outlets Plaza



Located at 5555 Jiasong Zhong Lu, Bailian Outlets Plaza spans over 160,000 sqm and houses over 300 stores and 400 brands. Mainly featuring renowned global fashion and sports brands, as well as local brands, expect to get a great discount when shopping here. The mall is located at Jiasong Zhong Lu Station. 


Dianshan Lake



Shanghai’s largest freshwater lake, Dianshan Lake, spans over 620,000sqm and is 11.5 times larger than Xihu. Some of the AAAA-rated sights nearby include Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, Oriental Land, Shanghai Sun Island and the Chen Yun Memorial Hall. 


Zhujiajiao



Known as 'Shanghai’s Venice,' small bridges and rivers can be found within Zhujiajiao; a renowned ancient town in Shanghai. Currently, the town has over 36 bridges including one of Shanghai’s oldest stone bridge, 9 streams, and oriental architecture inspired by the Ming dynasty. 


Heavily influenced by the Ming dynasty, some of the architects and designers involved in planning the town include Zhang Yong He, Ma Qing Yun, Deng Kun Yan, Liu Yichun and Chen Yifeng. Apart from bridges and rivers, the town also has many boutique stores including the Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore. 


Oriental Land



A great spot for training and teambuilding activities, Oriental land is near Dianshan Lake, and is well-equipped with facilities and amenities on top of natural beauty. The park is mainly split into '8 zones and 16 sights,' and provides activities like rock climbing, scientific exploration, training and more.


Line 9, Shanghai Metro


The third phase of the Line 9 extension project spans over 13.82km and consists of 9 stops. The extension will cross different residences, including Songjiang New Town, Xujiahui, Century Avenue, Jinqiao and Caolu.




Train Stations: Fangdian Lu Station, Lantian Lu Station (will also become a station on Line 14 in future), Taierzhuang Lu Station, Jinqiao Station, Jinji Lu Station, Jinhai Lu Station (station on Line 12 as well), Gutang Lu Station, Minlei Lu Station, Caolu Station.


Progress: As of November 20th, the third phase of the line 9 extension project has been evaluated by a professional team, and fully prepared for operations to begin.


Sights to look out for:


Century Park



Rich in biodiversity, Century Park is one of Shanghai’s largest and best park. It includes both eastern and western elements, man-made and natural one as well into its landscape. Some of the main sights include Century Flower Clock, Mirror Lake, open music square and Yunfan bridge. 


Jinhai Wetland Park



Located near the G20 Outer Ring Expressway, Jinhai Wetland Park is a natural park and a green oasis that incorporates both natural and man-made elements. Lakes and rivers account for a third of the overall area. 


Pujiang Line


Previously known as the 'Line 8 Third Phase project,' the Pujiang Line mainly services commuters in the Minhang and Pujiang town region, and spans over 6.644km. There are a total of 6 elevated stations, and each train will utilize driverless technology. 




Train Stations: Shengdu Highway Station, Sanlu Lu Station, Minrui Lu Station, Puhang Lu Station, Dongcheng Yi Lu Station, Huizheng Lu Station.


Sights to look out for: 


Pujiang Country Park



With 152,900 sqm of space, the park consists of 5 smaller parks with greens, flowers, farms, and ponds. Spend an evening here with friends or family and enjoy a secluded picnic and a quiet stroll. The park also has an old street consisting of many architecture and pieces from the Song dynasty.
