Tailor Bar Finds New Home in Historic Hotel

2017-12-15 ShanghaiWOWeng

Excellent news for classy cocktail enthusiasts, after closing their doors back in March, Tailor Bar has finally reopened in a new location.

Eddie Yang’s original Tailor Bar opened back in 2014 and amassed some glowing reviews before succumbing to Shanghai’s inevitable ‘landlord issues’ this past spring. Their new location is a timeless little haunt inside the Le Sun Chine, a boutique hotel on Huashan lu that’s been open since 1932.

The hotel operates the bar themselves everyday from noon until 5pm under the name ‘Salon Bar.’ They serve a basic selection of booze and afternoon tea. After 5pm though, the space gets taken over by Tailor Bar, offering guests… well, whatever they can think of.

Bar manager David Hong will whip you up some seriously good drinks, but hopefully you know what you want.

Just like the original, the new Tailor has no menu (aside from a high-end bottle service menu). Guests are expected to either know enough about cocktails to ask for what they want, or to give their preferences to a bartender and figure something out (hence the name ‘tailor’).

The hotel’s bar used to be quite popular, but business dipped around 2013, right around the time Shanghai’s speakeasy bar craze got into full swing. Yang was friends with hotel ownership, and when Tailor bar closed this past March, they saw an opportunity that might benefit them both.

Because the hotel has been around for so long, it has a vintage vibe that is (apart from a few exceptions in Shanghai) almost impossible to fake. The leather seats, wall paper, old lamps and antiques are worth the trip (I mean what other bar has a full suit of armor???).

You know what else is worth the trip though? The drinks…

As we said, they don’t have a menu, but you can ask for pretty much any drink you can name. Here are some suggestions in case you get nervous and forget what you like while ordering…

’Blue Blazer’ Jasmine tea, whiskey, bitters, sugar, orange peel and clove. RMB 90. This one is not as strong as the color would suggest, it's equal parts jasmine tea and whiskey. A sort of mulled drink for people who enjoy a no-frills hot booze drink

‘Bechroni’ Bechrovka, tequila blanca and cocchi americano RMB 90

‘Gin Sour’ Hendricks gin, lemon juice and sryup, egg whites, rose petal garnish RMB 100

And if you are in the mood to skip all the shakers and rose petals, here are a few optimal whiskey suggestions.

Aultmore 18 years [left], from Speyside in Scotland. Oily and floral, very rich with a heavy body. Also a bottle of Craigellachie 17 year[right], also from Speyside. Oily, with sulfur and leathery notes.

Bruichladdich, aged from Islay

No date is set for an ‘official’ opening, but we’re told it will probably be sometime after Chinese New Year. Tailor Bar is the 4th venue from the Tailor group, joining Second Moment, Above the Globe and (also newly-opened) Gan Bar.

**And one last (and extremely important) note: every Wednesday evening they have a tango dance party from 8:30 until 11:30pm.
