2017-12-18 ShanghaiWOWeng

Do you have someone special in your life who is obsessed with food? They don’t just like nice restaurants, they what to learn everything about the chef and ingredients. For this person they definitely do not eat to live, they live to eat! You travel to a foreign country with them and they give you a list of ten places they want to eat on the trip.

If you were struggling with a Christmas present for your food obsessed BAE, look no further. Take them out for one of these incredible food experiences in Shanghai. You will be the best gift giver ever.

Anthologia

You are not just going to Anthologia for dinner, but rather dinner and a show in traditional Kaiseki style. It is an eight-course meal with waitresses and chefs clad in kimonos and each course is accompanied by a multi-sensory experience including actors, projections and music. While the creative theme and showmanship is superb, the food is really the star, which is no surprise considering Anthologia is part of Fulu Restaurant Management responsible for Sushi Oyama, Kappo Yu, Elefante, etc.

Does your boo love steak? If so, the Beef Appreciation Master Class at Char led by Chef Willmer Colmenares will teach them everything they need to know from beef cattle breeds, cuts, grass versus grain fed, marbling and how to cook a perfect steak. The session begins with a presentation lead by the chef with a break for yummy snacks and coffee. Then the fun happens in the kitchen where you are led through cooking your steak. After tasting the different cuts of steak you have cooked (with sides of course), dessert is served back in the restaurant. It is a really fun day of eating, cooking and learning.

3D Journey with Marco Polo at Jade on 36

Jade on 36 Restaurant at Pudong Shangri-La is the first hotel to launce the ‘3D Le Petite Chef – Marco Polo series’ in mainland China. It is a quirky combination of gastronomy and entertainment with 3D animation as guests will be presented with stunning views of the Shanghai skyline as they savor culinary delights from the restaurant’s master chefs along with the tiny animated chef who ‘prepares’ meals right before your eyes. This journey begins in the Middle East making stops in India and the Himalayas before stopping in China. This 6 course meal is available until the end of January.

Jeju Izakaya

This is the choice for the foodie who is always in the know, as Jeju Izakaya by Belloco is currently the most coveted seat in town. The intimate eight-person space has two seatings a night, so only 16 people total can have dinner here each day. The five man cooking team is clearly having tons of fun and diners are treated to delicious modern Korean food, nice wine and highballs. Also impressive is value for money, so you can go as often as you can get a seat. Speaking of getting a seat, it is hard, best to follow their WeChat account, check the calendar, then message to request the day you prefer. I’ve just secured four seats for next month, and its second seating at 9:30pm, just to give you an idea. The option to rent out the whole place (RMB 5000 minimum) is also an option.

Tai’an Table

Tai’an Table is in a festive mood this season as they  have just celebrated their one year anniversary at Changning ‘Garden Office,’ and have put together a special Christmas and New Year menu featuring the best dishes from their past 12 menus. Expect plenty of interesting treats including onion and mushroom tarte flambée, snails & bone marrow with parsley mayo and herb salad, and ‘umeboshi’ cream cheese with matcha and dried strawberries. This is a perfect experience for the Tai’an Table newbie as well as the regular who wants to relive past gourmet meals. If you can’t make it for the holiday, schedule something in January or February.

Price: RMB 1588 (holiday menu)

Address: Lane 465, Zhenning Lu, No. 161, Bldg 1, Room 101-102 (near Wulumuqi Lu)

Hours: Tue-Sat, 6pm-11pm

Ultraviolet

Sure eating at Ultraviolet is not cheap, but we can promise that every second and bite is worth the experience. Paul Pairet’s passion project was the first to bring us multi-sensory dining in Shanghai and, with the addition of UVB and UVC to the original menu, it continues to surprise with lights, projections, fragrances and a very nostalgia driven play list. The wine pairings are so spot on that you will drink every drop, finding yourself a bit wobbly on the trip home. The food is obviously amazing, but the whole experience is top notch totally deserving of its three Michelin stars and position on World’s and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant list.
