We know exactly how you feel. You have been slammed with the end of year work load while trying to do your Christmas shopping, book flights for the holiday and attend all the fun parties you can, but you want to order a log cake for a holiday gathering and have no idea where to start. You haven’t had time to do your research (who reads all those WeChat push notifications anyway?) and want to get a sweet beautiful roll of festive goodness stat. You want it to be easy, and we’ve done the leg work for you. Read on for a list of vendors offering the best bûche de Noël in the city.

Laurent Moreno’s glistening Raspberry Xmas log cake


BREAD etc. has four different variations on the classic French sponge cake roulade. Two classic cakes: Red Velvet with raspberry cream  (RMB 258) or Caramel & Pear with praline croustillant (RMB 180). They also have two updated recipes by Chef Laurent Moreno: Coffee Marnier (RMB 238) using Grand Marnier orange liqueur or Raspberry Xmas (RMB 258) with chocolate mousse and raspberry confit.  Each cake serves 10 people. Make sure to order a day before pick up. In addition, they have mini two-person cakes (RMB 40-60) in store daily.

The COOK Bakery

The bakery at The COOK has created two versions of the Christmas dessert centerpiece perfect for your holiday celebrations, which are both available until Christmas. They do a traditional chocolate one with yellow sponge, creamy filling, and ganache coating, as well as a very pretty white vanilla flavored version that looks like a winter wonderland and is covered with lightly whipped cream and mixed berries. Both versions are RMB 198 for a seven inch log. Be sure to call ahead to place orders for pick up.

Cooking Skill Exchange (CSE)


Chef Chika creates a very traditional and delicous Yule Log 


In addition to teaching a workshop on the creation of your very own Yule Log cake (sadly it is too last minute to join), the Cooking Skill Exchange is also offering cakes for purchase. These cakes are cooked to the specification of their Chef Chika, who worked at the Paul Pairet’s three Michelin star restaurant, Ultraviolet. She is particularly passionate about baking and hopes to spread happiness via food. Order one day in advance (RMB 350) and get your own taste of happiness.

Pâte


The Winter bûche de Noël is in the front and the Autumn behind it


They take cake very seriously at Pâte, and have three highly-anticipated endings to your Christmas feasts. Two bûche de Noël take inspiration from the seasons. The Autumn log cake (RMB 250/petit, RMB 300/grande) is a marron honey sponge filled with (amongst other yummies) blueberry compote, marron mousse, chantilly chestnut purée and decorated with marron glacé (candied chestnut), fresh blueberries and matcha Christmas tree cookies. The winter cake (RMB 220/petit), RMB 270/grande) is rich with the flavors of chocolate, red wine soaked pears, chai, tea, pine nuts and orange. A glistening green glaçage dotted with strawberry meringue and chocolate cookies covers the roll. They also have a strawberry roll (RMB 160/one size) if you want something simpler. Petit cakes feed 2-4 while the other sizes feed 4-6. 


Place your orders 24 hours in advance to receive the next day. Cakes available until sold out.

Shanghai Young Bakers


You may purchase a student made cake (RMB 150) at Jingan Market or order a teacher made cake (RMB 268)


Christmas is a wonderful time for charity, and what better way to combine generosity with dessert? Shanghai Young Bakers is a program that trains marginalized Chinese youth (aged 17-23) in French baking, giving them necessary skills to find jobs and lead independent lives. They have been trained in creating both a traditional sponge cake roll made from butter and cream, as well as more modern, fashionable versions. If you go to Jing’an Market on December 23 or 24, you can get one of the student made creations. Otherwise order a teacher made cake by preordering three days in advance.
