5 Hearty Sandwiches to Get You Through Winter
Sometimes it’s so cold that the only thing that helps is a hot, meaty, hearty sandwich. Not always, but sometimes. If you find yourself in desperate need of that kind of inner warmth, here are 5 excellent options you can find in our fair city.
The New York Reuben @ Deli Boys
The New York Reuben, RMB 85
Address: Lane 710 Dingxi Lu
Tel: 021 6212 1722
Hours: Daily, 10:30am-10pm
Portions are big, quality is top-notch and the guys that own and run the place are insanely friendly.
Banh mi @ Saigon Mama
Address: Shanghai Centre, 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu
Tel: 021 6289 0522
Hours: Daily, 10am-10pm
A Banh mi may not be the first thing that pops up when you think of hot meaty sandwiches, but OH BOY this one probably should be. To be fair, everything at Saigon Mama is top notch and perfect for any weather, but the Banh mi shines.
Oppa Fried Chicken @ Fresh-off
‘Oppa Fried Chicken’ - Korean-style fried chicken, cabbage, pickled daikon, sesame, gochujang sauce, scallion, mayo. RMB 35
Address: 9 Ziyun Xi Lu
Hours: 10am-9pm
Tel: 1381627 2264
There are plenty of meaty and delicious options at Fresh-off, Austin Hu and Jessica Chu’s awesome Taiwanese fried sandwich spot. If hard-pressed to name one though, we’d have to go for the ‘Oppa Fried Chicken,’ which is a delightful fried ‘boat’ filled with korean-style fried chicken, cabbage, pickled daikon, sesame, gochujang sauce, scallion, mayo. All for just RMB 35.
Smoked Salmon Tartine @ Goose Island Brewhouse
Address: 209 Maoming Bei Lu
Tel: 021 6219 0268
Hours: Daily, 11am-1am
Most of the food at Goose Island Brewhouse will easily warm you up (and of course their beers could get you drunk enough to ignore any temperature). But for our money, we’re going with the Smoked Salmon Tartine. For RMB88 you’ll get a hearty helping of quality salmon, smoked on charcoal toast with olives, capers, gherkins, avocado, dill cream cheese, arugula salad. It’s a hearty sandwich that is also still relatively healthy.
Quad stack @ Bistro Burger
Address: A Mansion, 1/F, 291 Fumin Lu
Hours: Mon-Sat, 11am-12am (last order at 11pm), Sun, 11am-10pm
Tel: 021 6170 1315
Something that is decidedly NOT healthy, is the quad burger at Bistro Burger. If you’re looking for seriously, unmatched meatiness in Shanghai, this is it. 4 paddies, egg, bacon, different kinds of cheeses. It’s cost you RMB 200, BUT, if you decide to take their burger challenge and eat in under 15 minutes it’s free. If you finish in less than 8 minutes it’s free and so is the bill for your entire table (only one person has ever done this FYI).
