Here at Shanghai WOW! our team of Chinese editors and critics visit countless venues throughout the city, always looking for the best of the best. This year marks our 5th time awarding Shanghai's best in a wide number of categories. And while these awards usually feature venues that opened during the course of the previous year, for our 5th anniversary we decided to do something special! We're awarding the 50 best from the past 5 years, something we call our Super Best 50 Awards. Enjoy!




Ultraviolet has steadily risen to become one of the world's most buzzed about dining experiences, and with good reason. They only serve 10 people per night, giving those lucky diners a magical experience that delightfully assaults all the senses. Founded by the French chef Paul Pairet, Ultraviolet had a moster 2017, claiming 3rd place in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, and recieving 3 Michelin stars. For our 2017 Super Restaurant award, Ultraviolet was really the only sensible choice.



Shanghai featured dozens of world-class chefs at the top of their game this year, but when it came to choosing our Best Super Chef of 2017, it was an easy decision. Every time we think perhaps Paul Pairet has reached his peak, he steps it up another notch, combining an unparelleled avant-garde vision with skill, dedication and passion. Starting with Jade 36, his arrival brought something completely novel to Shanghai's F&B scene. From Mr & Mrs Bund, to Ultraviolet, and this year his latest addition: The Chop Chop Club | UNICO, his innovation and artistry show no signs of slowing anytime soon. 




seul&SEUL, opened during the second half of this year, is a creative restaurant inspired by the south of France. Chef Johnny’s Michelin-starred restaurant resume should not be underestimated. He incorporates authentic elements of French cuisine with the highest quality ingredients, so it’s not surprise this restaurant’s been such a hit.


Star chef Eduardo Vargas' latest masterpiece on Hengshan Road gives you a taste of real Peruvian cuisine.




Highline is located right in the middle of the bustling city center, and has managed to reproduce a restaurant that embodies California’s West Coast vibes. It boasts 300 square meters of penthouse terrace, coupled with excellent city views. It’s no wonder this is a top meeting place for Shanghai movers and shakers.


There’s been a huge influx of Cantonese cuisine in Shanghai, whether it’s morning tea for a few hundred RMB or haute cuisine you’re after, it’s here.




Hidden in Bund No. 5 is the 1-star Michelin restaurant Bo Shanghai, founded by master chef Alvin Leung. The concept of his restaurant is “the ultimate Chinese food,” which is based on the eight major cuisines of China.


Paul Pairet is in charge of this innovative dining experience at Bund No. 3, where the signature dishes must be bid on as they are sent out fresh from the kitchen.




Shari is a low-key restaurant hidden in Yongjia Lu. In spite of that, it’s frequently been featured in TV dramas. Every season the chef creates a brand new menu of seasonal dishes using seasonal ingredients. You can try the ultimate esoteric flavors of Japanese and French delicacies here.


This is a classic restaurant located in the original British Consulate. It houses thousands of rare works of art and antiques dating back decades.





Joël Robuchon’s iconic concept provides notable gastronomy to valued guests with an ultimate fine dining experience inspired by French culture. Only half a year after of its grand opening, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon was awarded Michelin Two Star. Standing for its prior position of haute French cuisine, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon is awarded Michelin Two Stars again by 2018 Michelin Guide.


Jean-Georges is a name that has become synonymous with Luxury dining, and Shanghai's venue is certainly no exception. Classic French dishes presented through the use of bold, Asian-inflected seasonings and unexpected flavor combinations make for a world-class dining experience.




On the 91st floor, 100 Century Avenue is one of the highest restaurants in the world. It’s the epitome of the “Alpine Pavilion,” as designed by New York-based architect Ji Yutang. Through the window you have a panoramic view of the city’s boundless skyline, and inside the restaurant you can even get a glimpse inside the kitchen. 


This place at the top of Three on the Bund combines delicious and artsy American cuisine with a beautiful terrace overlooking The Bund and Lujiazui’s iconic skyline.




This building, which recently completed a RMB 12 million rennovation, used to be a popular social venue for the wealthy Shanghai elites. Today, it's the pinnacle of luxury venues, with stunning private KTV rooms, live music performances, a beautiful glass dance floor with LED lights underneath, and an interesting mix of young and old who come to enjoy a glimpse of classic Shanghai. 


Immerse yourself in a Japanese restaurant and theatre, with exquisite Japanese cuisine under the big screen.





A brand new Cantonese restaurant on the fifth floor of Three on the Bund. The design is inspired by the nostalgic Shikumen and the glamorous Shanghai Bund, while threaded with modern simplicity. It connects two golden eras of this magnificent city.


This super luxurious restaurant offers a 270 degree view of the river and the Bund. It showcases the contrast between Old Shanghai and modern pop art.





Located inside the classic architecture of Boheng 55 on Wulumuqi Nan Lu, Ji Xin Xuan features classic Cantonese delicacies and adds new elements to traditional Chinese cooking methods. Each private room here is based on Western designers’ ideas, making them vivid and fresh.


This little three-storey restaurant boasts a Michelin star. The interior design looks more like a family home than a fancy diner, so it feels like enjoying a world class meal right at home.





Tai'an Table is one of Shanghai’s most magical Michelin restaurants. There are a total of just 28 seats inside, and the menu changes every month. They offer 14 dishes, which you can watch being prepared and cooked by the chefs in their stunning open kitchen.


This top Italian restaurant's chef’s table only allows two people to sit at it per day, but they’ll provide you with a number of surprises, from the ingredients to the dishes. The embodiment of a one-of-a-kind experience.




Jean-Georges has been redesigned to make the most of as much of their space as possible, as well as keeping a solemn, elegant symmetry. The whole restaurant is clean and white, exuding luxury from top to bottom.


The overall design is the perfect fusion of British art with Chinese aesthetics. It has the stamp of approval from Paris’ GBRH studio. The use of everything from materials, to color, to the lighting is all magnificent and a visual feast to accompany the literal one.





The signature St. Regis Sunday Brunch feast combines international buffet extravaganza and signature cuisines inspired from its 6 dining venues. The spread includes freshly shucked oysters, a plethora of fresh seafood options from Boston lobster to tiger prawns, live stations for sushi and sashimi from Japanese restaurant Seki-Tei, to roasts like Australian Wagyu beef and lamb chops, Cantonese dim sum and barbecued meats from famous Chinese chef. Free flow of Chandons, Bloody Mary cocktail and fresh juices. 


Mr & Mrs Bund has become a staple of luxury French food in Shanghai. Their succulent brunch menu along with the incredible view of the Bund makes for a perfect morning.




The afternoon tea here is served in porcelain Villeroy & Boch cups from Germany. The exotic flowers and animals ornaments adorning the tea set instantly give the impression that you’re in some far off land. You can pick your tea from a selection of Singapore’s high quality TWG tea, accompanied by classic Western pastries. It’s served daily from 2:30-4:30pm.


The ideal spot for guests to indulge in the famous Red Velvet afternoon tea with a glass of Champagne.




Located on the second floor of Puli Hotel, Phenix has a Michelin star! They have a selection of the finest, freshest ingredients to create unique and contemporary French cuisine in a simple but elegant setting.


Located within Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li, this is a casual chic restaurant by legendary chef Pierre Gagnaire, serving simple, honest and elegant French cuisine.




Sabor is located on the Bund alongside many other incredible creative restaurants. The style is a quirky mix of retro and nature. The restaurant insists on using the finest raw materials to maintain the food’s natural scent. They always use seasonal ingredients, so the menu changes regularly.


Calypso Restaurant & Lounge is a Mediterranean restaurant owned by Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai. It has a romantic ambience and excellent food to match.





Nestled along the Bund, it offers stunning views across the river. The chef, Bombana, leads his team in creating one of the highest quality 2 Michelin star expereinces out there.


This place has been sitting on the Bund for five years now, which just goes to show how well-loved it is.




This place is designed to be hidden away and is a bit mysterious-looking from the outside. The plot thickens as once inside there are just 22 seats. The interior decor is elegant and the Japanese background music is wonderfully calming. It’s almost as if you’ve been whisked away to Japan for the evening.


The authentic Edo sushi here has won universal praise.




The is Shanghai’s only Japanese BBQ restaurant to win a Michelin star. From the food to the service, everything is stunningly top notch. A new branch just opened this year on the Bund, with simple indoor decor that still manages to be fashionable. 


A Japanese style of cooking bite-size meat on the griddle over white charcoal and serve with prime Australian & US beef.




Adding to a number of awards, T’ang Court has been awarded Three Michelin Stars in the 2018 Michelin Guide, Shanghai. As the only Chinese restaurant in Mainland China to attain this accolade for the second consecutive year, T’ang Court offers a unique dining experience for even the most culturally savvy diner.


This is a top Cantonese brand with superb cooking standards.





This newcomer managed to win a Michelin star this year. The ambience is low-key but elegant. Fresh seafood is brought here from fishermen in Ningbo and only the most authentic Ningbo dishes are served.


This restaurant offers a fusion of Shanghai and Taizhou specialties.




Daimon Gastrolounge was created by Chef Alvin Leung, and is heavily inspired by Hong Kong in the 70s. The retro, street art vibe inside is a wonderful reason to visit this space, but an even better reason is the food. 


This mansion in xintiandi offers an Old Shanghai style experience with an Italian touch. Everything from the decor to the dishes is a fusion of tastes.




This hot pot on Jinxian Lu is reminiscent of exquisite private restaurants in Hong Kong. It’s pretty small with just over 10 seats. The Hong Kong owner wants to keep it as authentic as possible, and because of that, you have to book months in advance.


There's no better place to be than in the complete private Heng Feng style dinning room to enjoy SI-BU Nabe hot pot recipes to warm you up.





This incredible restaurant received a Michelin star this year, and rightfully so. It serves vegetarian dishes made with the most seasonal ingredients based on Chinese health concepts, all without being bland in the least bit. Innovative cooking techniques and international cuisine offer a brand new taste experience.


This is a fusion of a European barn, restaurant and market in one! The idea is “healthy gourmet.”





Located in Shaanxi Nan Lu, this enormous teahouse boasts six floors, 12 rooms and 4000 square meters of dining space. The ceilings are covered with bamboo ornaments, while the ground is made of antique bricks.


This is the perfect place to forget all your worries and warm your heart with a delicious cup of tea.





The world’s biggest Starbucks is a circular “theatre,” as well as being the world’s second Starbucks baking theatre. It’s a whopping 2,700 meter squares and has more captivating features than we even have space to mention.


The coffee here is made with fine Japanese craftsmanship, and it’s their only flagship store overseas. Their unique blended coffee formula creates a very different flavor. A new definition of fine coffee.




New York-based Lady M is known as the Chanel of the cake industry. After opening in Shanghai this year, the store triggered a queueing frenzy, with endless lines of eaters hoping to get a taste of their 8 classic cakes.


The super popular New York-based Chikalicious arrived in Xintiandi two years ago, much to the delight of dessert fans in Shanghai.





When entering Bund 18, you can see La Boutique de Joël Robuchon just on your left, which offers Mr. Robuchon’s classic cakes, desserts, bread and bakeries. Truly an incredible selection of desserts you can enjoy in this unique and historical setting. 


Advocating less sugar and oil, Pain Chaud offers pastries exactly like what you’d get on the streets of Paris!




The 600 square metre city-center terrace is certainly one of the most eye-catching around. Plus the 300-unit LED “digital sky garden” connects you to the entire magical skylline.


Hidden inside one of Shanghai's most popular hotels is a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike. Enjoy W's cocktail culture and light tapas on their stunning terrace with an endless panoramic view of the Pudong skyline.




This is located at the junction of Jianguo Xi Lu and Yueyang Lu. There are 55 high-class villa hotels, 40 serviced apartments and the 5000 meter squared commercial street - it’s got The Gallery, Capella Shanghai, GENTSPACE, and a number of other top international brands.


Hidden in the center of the city, this 14,000 square meter area is a fashionable blend of Chinese and Western culture.

SpaceCycle treats music as the key to the soul, and has therefore created a “fashion X social X fitness X technology” workout space. The music-themed Space Cycle, Space Barre, Space Moves and Space Yoga courses are available 24/7.


Located in the heart of the commercial area, the environment is fresh and advanced. It’s Asia’s leading yoga and lifestyle brand, so you can expect all the yoga teachers here are world-class.




HKRI Taikoo Hui is located in the heart of West Nanjing Road CBD. The development covers an area of about 63,000 square metres (about 676,000 square feet), and a gross floor area of about 322,000 square metres (about 3,460,000 square feet).The mall hosts a trade mix of around 250 brands, covering everything from fashion and accessories, beauty, a supermarket and a yoga & spinning centre to more than 40 F&B international dining options. 


Zhongshan Park shopping district is another commercial complex with a whopping 7 stories that combine historical and fashionable elements.




Flask returned this year with a stunning new space on Xiangyang Bei Lu. They may have left the fake coke machine entrance behind, but they've maintained every bit of the sleek design and perfect drinks that made them so popular in the first place. 


Daniel An's new antque haunt along Sinan lu is a gorgeous, intimate little spot for a delightful cocktail. 




Blackstone made us all realize that a magic bar is not only possible, it's a hell of a lot of fun. 


Hip design, an innovative 3-part space and New York Chinatown vibes throughout made this place a huge hit this year. 




Speak Low, home to world-class bartender Shingo Gokan, is undoubtedly the star in Shanghai’s cocktail bar industry. It’s been featured in The Best 50 Bars in Asia for 2 years in a row, and this year it was even featured in the World’s Best 50 Bars.


Candor came back with a vengence this year, offering a heavy dose of fabulous decor and drinks to match. 




Cool industrial retro style and a huge selection of single malt whiskey are the highlights here. They have all kinds of whiskey and they specialize in making cocktails for those who appreciate a flair of creativity without sacrificing one bit of flavor.


This is an old whiskey bar and shop. Whether you want pure whiskey or a whiskey cocktail, they’ve got you covered in their gorgeous venue.




The Goose Island Brewhouse is a massive, beautiful ode to perfectly-made beer. It takes up two floors, and is filled with inviting industrial design, including 40 goose beer taps, and their own world-class brewing equiptment. 


A two-story brewery in Xintiandi, The Refinery is an industrial pop-style American restaurant. Their homemade beer has won international awards.




Like Sports? CAGES is the spot for you, combining American dining, baseball batting cages, and over ten other sports in their nearly 4,000sm Jing'an location. Equipped with over 70 HD TVs, it's the best spot to watch any sporting event taking place around the globe.  Add to it that you can actually play sports, drink and eat and you have a sport-lover's paradise.


The new Camel Bar offers a variety of craft beer and four enormous 70-inch HD TVs!




JZ Club has reopened last year, much to the relief of Shanghai jazz fans. The interior decor is retro but romantic. It’s got 1 large bar, 140 seats, and can accommodate up to 200 people for their nightly live shows.


EZ5 is Taiwan’s most popular music bar, and has enjoyed 26 years of success there. This year they decided to bring their brand to Shanghai, offering sultry live shows and excellent drinks. 




The Nest, located in the Rockbund, is a gastro lounge created by Muse Group and Bacardi. It’s stylish, elegant and modern with a beautiful open kitchen.


Nordic whiskey bar combined with some of the best seafood in the city. This unique space has a little something for everyone. 




Located in Found 158, Taxx has become one of the hottest clubs in Shanghai. The venue can accommodate 3,000 people, and it has a 3D stereo surround sound system, 4D holographic projection, as well as indoor music festivals.


Located at Three on the Bund, it manages to be retro, mysterious and sexy all at the same time.




Atsushi Suzuki has won numerous international bartending awards. His unique creativity is the main reason he’s been top of his game in Shanghai for many years. He combines Japanese elements with traditional cocktails to create his own original and unmistakable style.


Daniel An, winner of several international cocktail competitions, enjoys quite the reputation in Shanghai's cocktail community, and rightfully so. His 'Antique by Taste Buds' was a hit as soon as it opened.




Capella is Shanghai’s only all-villa hotel and home to 17-Michelin-starred chef’s restaurant. It boasts 55 suites and 40 standard rooms.


Situated on West Beijing Road in the heart of the Jingan District, Shanghai’s cultural and business center, The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan, provides guests convenient access to explore Shanghai’s storied past and bustling present. 




Located on the 13th floor of the Five-Star Peninsula Shanghai, Sir Elly’s has been awarded with one Michelin star for two years in a row. It serves Modern European cuisine paired with breathtaking views of the Bund, Huangpu River and Pudong skyline. 


The sister restaurant of the Michelin-starred eatery in Hong Kong, Ming Court produces “oriental Paris” style cuisine, as well as fine wine.




Flair Rooftop is the tallest terrace bar in Shanghai, located on the top floor of the Ritz-Carlton. You can see absolutely all of the stunning night scenery from this epic perch. 


A 34-meter landmark bar in the city featuring the ultimate night life on the Bund with live music entertainment. Boasting an oyster bar and chef's special nibbles.




There are 10 relaxing treatment rooms, including a dry room, 8 multi-purpose treatment rooms and 1 double suite, offering a range of personalised spa treatments. Designed by renowned designer Richard Farnell, the spa space blends theatrical effects, stylish lines and art deco.


Hudie on the Bund, designed by the famous Paris designer D-LM, has been carefully created to combine soft and natural elements for a home-like environment.





W Suzhou is inspired by the “Levitating Garden.” Designed by Rockwell Group, the hotel emphasises traditional Suzhou culture and nature.


World class gardener Bensley is exceedingly proud of this Four Seasons Hotel hidden by the West Lake.




Located on the tranquil Xinhua Lu, it’s a century-old villa named after the chef Nicolas Le Bec. There’s a large green garden perfect for cocktail parties, weddings, birthday parties, or any other group gathering you might want to make special. 


French 3-Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno created a pure French bistro here, with everything from the ingredients to the design matching “the taste of Paris.”
