New Opening: Kathleen's Bistro is a Pudong Gem

2017-12-29 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

Kathleen is certainly not a new name in the Shanghai dining scene, but Kathleen's Bistro is a more casual younger sibling to previous iconic ventures Kathleen's 5 and Kathleen's Waitan (RIP to that wonderful view). This Lujiazui location just opened last month. The bistro is a great spot for lunch (both business and personal), light dinners or a snack after some sightseeing. Heck you can even fit in a stop on your way back from the visa office.

Seafood platter (RMB 668), serves 2-3 people

The seafood platter is an absolute treat and would make a great shared starter for 2-3 people, or a light lunch with bread for 3-4. The platter includes a range of hot and cold seafood including lobster tail, shrimp, oysters, mussels, tuna and salmon sashimi and snails, served with wasabi mayo and soy sauce on the side.

One of the six oysters served with the seafood platter (RMB 668)

The lobster tail and oysters were my two top picks from the seafood platter. The Oysters are from currently New Zealand but that will change depending on seasonality and come served with vinegar, lemon and Tabasco so you can season to taste.

Angus Beef Carpaccio (RMB 78)

The beef carpaccio is served with raw mushrooms, arugula, croutons and thinly sliced asparagus topped in a fresh tart balsamic vinegar dressing. The beef is thinly sliced perfection and the sweetness of the asparagus balanced the tartness of the rocket and balsamic. A great starter for one.

Boston Lobster Salad (RMB 120)

The Boston Lobster salad was a little disappointing, I was really looking forward to the berry dressing which was a little lost amongst all of the other flavors on the plate. Though the Thousand Island dressing they make in house is delicious and the lobster tail was cooked to perfection.

Australian beef fillet 'rossini' with foie gras (RMB 358)

The beef fillet with foie gras was by far my favorite main dish. The beef was tender, pink and succulent, served with a creamy mash, roasted vegetables and tender stem broccoli. The best part for me was dipping the foie gras into the rich beef gravy, an absolute delight.

Beijing Roast Duck Pizza (RMB 118)

They also serve pizza! This may seem like a bit of a bizarre step to the left, but I like it. They’re well priced, filling and served on a delicious crispy base!

Lava cake (RMB 68)

The best dessert by far was the lave cake, a perfect melt in the middle pudding that exploded chocolate goodness when you cut into it. The chocolate is extremely rich and a little bitter but it’s perfect with the vanillia ice cream served on the side. This would be the perfect dessert for one choco-holic or for two to share.

My overall opionion of Kathleen’s bistro is good. It’s a little bizarre that they serve lobster, sashimi and pizza, but they do it all well and it works. The location is good, if you’re over that side of the river, and the staff are friendly and knowledgable.

All in all, would I go back? Absolutely.
