Food Diaries: What Do Fit People Eat?

2018-01-02 ShanghaiWOWeng

Twice a year we interview Shanghai’s Super Men and Women trainers on their habits and lifestyles. All of them are sculpted and glowing from their fitness classes, but we wanted to ask them about the other important key in maintaining their health and physiques: food. They all have their own versions of what it means to be healthy, but it seems they all follow the same guidelines – everything in moderation, creating healthy habits, and having a treat once in a while. Here’s what they said about how they balance their plates with their fit lifestyles.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

Balance is key. Don't deprive yourself of things you love, but workout regularly and eat right when you can.

What are your go-to meals?

Kale Salads from Sproutworks.

What do you eat after a workout?

Most people have a protein shake or bar after their workout. I love juices. Any mix that includes orange and ginger.

What's your cheat meal?

Chocolate!

What advice would you give our readers?

Don't think too much about dieting. Do your best to eat right when you can, but make sure you're enjoying the things you love. Just make sure you get at least 2-3 workouts in weekly so you keep your body active.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

80% Healthy food 20% Soul food

What are your go-to meals?

I will usually wok colorful veggies and minced meat. Easy, quick and delicious. It's hard to mess it up.

What do you eat after a workout?

My largest meal of the day takes place within 90 minutes of a workout. I usually go for 40% protein 40% carbohydrates and 20% fat.

What's your cheat meal?

Burgers, burgers, more burgers and a milkshake.

What advice would you give our readers?

Educate yourself.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

I’m pretty relaxed about food, I try and feel out what my body needs. I like to eat tasty nourishing plant based meals. One of my yoga teachers said that if you are happy with what you are about to eat & eat it with joy then it can only be good for you.

What are your go-to meals?

Salads! Super quick and easy to make. I love avo on toast in the morning. These winter days I’ve been having warm porridge in the morning and have been a bit obsessed with soups and roast veggies.

What do you eat after a workout?

Usually a quinoa kale salad with hummus and a coconut water.

What's your cheat meal?

Burgers! Big fan of the veggie burgers at Daliah and Midnight Burger. And the mock chicken nuggets at Green Vege Cafe are a dream.

What advice would you give our readers?

Take it easy, eat what makes you feel good & what is best for your individual body + balance it all out with exercise / a mindfulness practice.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

I eat everything and my nutrition is based on Organic beef, chicken and salmon, fresh vegetables, and smart carbs like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, zucchini noodles, black/brown rice, quinoa, butternut squash and chickpeas (hummus). I also eat healthy fats including olive/avocado/coconut oil, almonds, walnuts, and avocados. I love avocados.

What are your go-to meals?

Chicken, Sweet potato, avocado and a salad bottle (greens juice including avocado, kale and another 10 green veggies). It takes me 5 minutes to prepare and I can eat it anywhere.

What do you eat after a workout?

My post workout meal will usually be: a shake including natural whey protein (no artificial flavors) + coconut water (I use gre3n) + natural honey (I use energy honey) and pineapple when available, second option is banana, but pineapple its way better after workout.

What’s your cheat meal?

My cheat meal is egg benedict (salmon and beef) plus a Nutella crepe AND a Nutella waffle. Yes, I eat one of each, if I cheat, I cheat well   It’s something I also recommend to all my clients once a week, and even if sounds crazy, it helps to burn more fat the following week since our metabolism will be higher and not only that, it helps us to be focused knowing we can eat whatever we want on Sunday and this way being consistent and healthy the rest of the week it’s much easier.

What advice would you give our readers?

Make it simple and do not do diets and enjoy what you eat. Diets are something no one likes or enjoys and the only thing you want to do when you start one is finish it to start eating  ”normal” again. Instead of diets, follow a healthy nutrition that allows you to eat whatever you want once in a while and keeps you focused on high value food the rest of the time, enjoying what you eat it’s basic to be healthy not just now, but for the rest of our lives.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

Anything that energizes me. The cleaner and the greener the better.

What are your go-to meals?

Green smoothies, oats with nuts for breakfast. If I’m out for lunch meeting people, I usually try to go somewhere that is fresh and has a lot of veggie choices.  Hunter gatherer and Pure and Whole are definitely in the rotation.

What do you eat after a workout?

Usually nothing too big, a snack maybe. I always make sure I have fruit and nuts in my bag.

What's your cheat meal?

My hometown is Guilin, and nothing reminds me of Home like a big bowl of fried noodles with a sunny side egg on top.  I always make sure they add lots of greens though to balance it out.

What advice would you give our readers?

Health is a cycle - the better you are to your body, the more connected you will be with your body and the better you will treat yourself.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

Balance, not just in food but in life in general.

What are your go-to meals?

Usually it's chicken breast with some vegetables, such as spinach or broccoli.

What do you eat after a workout?

Drink protein shake and maybe have some wrap or sandwich with beef or chicken.

What’s your cheat meal?

I love burgers or pancakes as a cheat meal.

What advice would you give our readers?

My advice is to have a balance in food and habits can be trained. If you consume a lot of unhealthy food for a long time and/or your metabolism is slow, get ready to suffer for some time to bring it back. When it's all balanced your body will tell you yourself what's choices are the best! It's all about good habits - why do we suffer from illness after bad habits of food intake, instead of choosing to suffer a bit to bring good habits in?

What is your motto when it comes to food?

My motto when it comes to food is BALANCE. Every day when I eat I try to be mindful of what I’ve eaten that day and that week and am constantly working to give my body a diverse and balanced assortment of foods and nutrients.

What are your go-to meals?

My go to meals are rice and grain bowls! Maybe it’s because I’m from LA, but I love mixing different healthy and tasty ingredients into a bowl with a base of rice, quinoa, lentils, or a little bit of it all!

What do you eat after a workout?

After a workout I try to eat as much as I can to replenish my body. I have a very fast metabolism and teach cardio classes, so it’s important for me to eat as soon as possible after exercising. I choose foods with high caloric and nutritional value. I try to listen to what my body is asking for (not to be confused with what my mind wants) so I’m able to consume more!

What’s your cheat meal?

My cheat meal is something sweet that should be eaten in moderation. I love chocolate! I don’t consider it a cheat meal though. As long as it’s in balance with everything else I eat then it’s fine! I don’t like to think of any type of food as a reward or punishment. I don’t find that to be a healthy way to relate to food.

What advice would you give our readers?

As a fitness professional I see a lot of people that don’t have a healthy relationship with food. Many create exercise as a way to punish themselves for something they’ve eaten and I find this to be the ultimate negative relationship with food. If you find yourself punishing yourself for what you ate, you’ll never have a healthy relationship with exercise either. Work out because you enjoy it and make it part of your healthy lifestyle, which also includes your food choices.

What is your motto when it comes to food?

Maintain a healthy balance on your plate and for your life. Just because I eat healthy leading up to a race, doesn't mean I won't be drinking a celebratory beer (or two) after!

What are your go-to meals?

Breakfast is my favorite meal, so if I'm not working the early sessions, I'll typically do eggs with corn thins and veggies and/or avocado for breakfast, but sometimes a big green smoothie or oats with coconut milk and fruit and nuts is it. For lunch it will be some roasted veggie mix with a protein like chickpeas and cheese or 'Buddha bowls' with homemade dressing. And dinner is always a toss-up depending on what's on.

What do you eat after a workout?

Typically, after a workout I munch on roasted cashews and almonds, almond butter with fruit or hard boiled eggs until I can get to a real meal. If I can though, I'd go for a big salad bowl with lots of veggies, a solid stash of protein (like chickpeas) and/or some fish like tuna or salmon. Saucepan and Ban Ban are good go-to's that help meet this mix!

What’s your cheat meal?

Anything and everything from Egg!

What advice would you give our readers?

Try to incorporate little changes into your routine to help you establish those long term bigger goals. Fitness is important, but nutrition is key if you want to see results. But also don't be so hard on yourself that you shy away from all social events, feel guilty for eating that red velvet chocolate chunk cookie, or feel unhappy for deciding not to eat it -  you've got to treat yourself too!
