New Morton's Grille has the American Classics You Need

2018-01-04 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

With the opening of Morton’s Grille at Raffles Changning, Shanghai is now the only city that has three different Morton’s concepts: Morton’s Grille, Morton’s of Chicago, the Steakhouse and Morton’s Steak & Seafood Grille. While certainly a chip off the Morton’s family block, it is a younger, newer concept that combines the same quality ingredients with a friendlier price point. Steak prices are consistent, but lower priced dishes such as pastas and flatbreads round out the menu.

The bar could be at home in any Morton’s venue worldwide.

Starting out your meal with a Grille Platter is the way to go. You can choose hot or chilled for RMB 158 per person. It’s cool that you can order per person, because then there is one of each item for everyone. It’s basically Morton’s greatest hits: tuna tacos, iceberg bites, signature jumbo lump crab cake, etc. Why are the crab cakes so good you ask? Well, that’s because they are mostly crab (how novel) with barely enough flour and breadcrumbs to bind it all together. One bite and you will understand while they are the top selling appetizer across all of Morton’s venues. Our other favorite dish on the platter is buffalo chicken meatballs. Plus, as one would expect, they do not skimp on blue cheese.

Prosciutto & pesto flatbread (RMB 108)

A selection of flatbreads hover around the RMB 100 mark and are a good way to fill your tummy while bringing down the overall meal cost. Pay slightly more and get steak and blue cheese on your flatbread (RMB 128) although we recommend splitting a steak instead if you are craving beef.

USDA prime ribeye (left) and Australian filet mignon (right)

Morton’s has been using the same supplier (for US meat) internationally since 1978 which ensures a consistent product cut to their exact thickness specifications. Add to that their 1000° F grill imported from the US and you get some seriously tasty steaks. Choose the USDA Prime center-cut ribeye for a richer more marbled experience (RMB 518/340g) or the Australian center-cut filet mignon (RMB 238/170g, RMB 288/240g) for a leaner, tenderer cut.  All steaks are grain-fed for that full-on American steakhouse experience.

Top that steak with bourbon pepper sauce, blue cheese butter or foie gras-cognac butter (RMB 12) or go all out with crab and garlic beurre blanc sauce (RMB 78). Sides are pretty traditional with our hands-down favorite being Smokey Joe’s Mac ‘N’ Cheese. They use a combination of six kinds of cheese, but it’s the smoked flavor that wins us over.

Sauteed broccoli florets (RMB 28)

Macaroni and Cheese (RMB 48)

The legendary hot chocolate cake has been on the menu for 40 years (RMB 88)

With a number of premium steaks and a huge selection of 100-200 labels of wine, you can still find yourself spending between RMB 400-500 for dinner, but you do not have to, which is the difference between Morton’s Grille and their other concepts. It is entirely possible to dine at lunch for around RMB 100. They have several lunches for RMB 98, plus steak sets including potato and soup or salad starting at RMB 258. We will definitely stop in to take advantage of the Power Hour (bar only) when reduced priced bites such as tuna tacos (RMB 28) and the four petite filet mignon sandwiches (RMB 68) can be paired with RMB 38 cocktails and martinis from 4pm to 7pm daily. Bear in mind that all prices are subject to a 10% service charge.
