HOW TO: Using a Drone in Shanghai

2018-01-06 ShanghaiWOWeng

We’ve all seen amazing drone footage and thought 'wow, I want to do that.’ Well there’s good news, it’s pretty easy! All you need is a drone, which can easily be found here in Shanghai, and a little bit of info.

Where can I buy a drone in Shanghai?

There are dozens of places, but here are three reliable options:

1. DJI Shanghai Flagship Store

Address: Madang Road No. 232

Hours: Mon - Sun: 10am – 10pm

Tel: 021 5388-2588

This is probably your best option in Shanghai. They have a wide range of different sized drones that offer all sorts of features from HD video and more.

2. Shinesun Digital Plaza (Electronic Market)

Address: 1F, 225 Xizang Nan Lu, (near HuaiHai Lu)

Hours: Mon - Sun: 10am – 9pm

Tel: 021 3366 5507

3. Taobao (duhhh)

www.taobao.com

How much is it?

Drones range from around RMB 100 for small toy ones up to around RMB 60,000 for a professional level one, but the most popular ones are in the RMB 3,000-6,000 range.

Do I need to register my drone?

If your drone is over 250 grams (most are) you must register it with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), which can be done online at this web address:

https://uas.caac.gov.cn/login

**This website is all in Chinese, so if you can’t read characters, find a friend to help (most drone retailers like DJI will do this for you upon purchase).

Once completed, you’ll be given a QR code and a registration number to print out and put on your drone, it looks like this:

You’re ready to fly!

***One more thing to note, if your drone is above 7kg you must apply for a special commercial license in order to fly it in China, that license costs RMB 15-18k and you should contact your place of purchase for further info.

Where can I fly a drone in Shanghai, is it restricted in certain places?

There are plenty of places you can fly your drone in Shanghai, but it’s very important to know where you cannot fly. There are restricted no-fly zones, often near government buildings, bridges, above highways, stadiums etc. For a full list and guide to no-fly zones you can download the 'Hover' app in the app store.

This app is all you need to get started in terms of flying locations.

And that’s pretty much it! If you’re interested in getting started right away, we would recommend going to the DJI Shanghai Flagship Store in Xintiandi. They’ll let you test fly a bunch of different drones in the store and their employees are quite helpful, speak enough English to get you through the process, and they’ll help you register and set up everything you need so that you’re ready to fly as soon as you walk out the door.
