Shanghainese Hidden Gem on Changle Lu

2018-01-10 ShanghaiWOWeng

Good news for all Shanghainese food lovers! We've found a lesser known yet easy to find shop on 764 Changle Lu. This Shanghainese-run store has over three to four decades of history, and boast a great fanbase.  Offering value-for-money and affordable Shanghainese food, get classics like fried pork cutlet or big wonton for around RMB 10 – 20, a rare price tag in Shanghai today.

While there is a long queue when dining here, fret not about long waiting times due to quick turnovers made possible by experienced and skilled service staff.

The stove where the wontons are cooked can be found outside between the alleys just like that of shops in the old Shanghai period.

Feast your eyes on the mouthwatering and aromatic Lion’s Head meatballs when entering the store!

Back in the early days, the store started by selling childhood favorites like prawn crackers, fried pork cutlet and borscht. And over the years, they expanded their menu to include more local delights while keeping to their affordable price tag.

Once seated, the service staff will take the table’s orders quickly, and serve the dishes shortly after.

Offering both indoor and outdoor dining options, diners need not worry about the hygiene standards here as the store ensures that it is well-kept at all times.

Headlining the store is the fried pork cutlet made from the original store’s recipe. Crispy on the outside, the cutlet has an even thickness, and goes great with chilli sauce.

For noodle-lovers, the top choice here is definitely the spicy meat noodles, which is not very spicy and tend to be on the sweeter side. Complimented with pickled vegetables, meat here are evenly cut with an equal portion of fat and lean cuts.

Do also try out their tomato and egg dish when here! The seemingly ordinary dish charms with its fluffy eggs and well-cooked tomatoes.

Another popular food item here is the vegetable and meat wonton. For just RMB 10, the wontons here are definitely worth the price tag. Well-filled with finely cut filling, they pack a crunch, and is well complimented against their slightly chewy skin.

Lastly, for those ordering takeaway, heed the friendly boss’ advice and do include some scallion oil into your dish to maintain its moisture.
