9 Drinks Cocktail Haters Will Love

2018-01-12 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

If you’re not into your cocktails, you think it’s all sparklers and little pink umbrellas: 1. You’re wrong. 2. you’re wrong and 3. you’re wrong. Have a Negroni and shut up. OR try some of these amazing cocktails made with ingredients that will seriously make you reconsider your anti-cocktail stance.

KRU

Address: 119 Hengshan Lu

Opening times: Daily, 1pm to 2am  (except Tuesdays)

Tel: 0121 5456 5913

KRU is our favorite new kid on the block. This classy wine bar tucked into Yong Ping Lane has just launched an innovative range of wine cocktails. When I heard wine cocktails, my heart plummeted; I thought I would be drinking 50 shades of sangria and going home with a head ache. Oh how wrong I was.

Farmers Market, RMB 78

Ingredients: Sauvignon Blanc, G’vine Gin, banana liqueur, apple, green apple puree

This Sauvignon Blanc based cocktail topped with sliced green apple was an absolute delight. It was fresh and light and tasted like spring. It was fruity without falling into the ‘pina colada’ trap. Whilst quite sour from the green apple puree on the first sip the banana liqueur adds a sweetness that lingers in the mouth. This cocktail is a real winner.

Herbal Grapery, RMB 68

Ingredients: Cabernet Sauvignon, basil and pepper infused rum, pineapple, lime, lemongrass syrup, ginger ale

This tipple is really surprising without being bizarre. It has a full bodied and round backbone with high tannins from the Cabernet Sauvignon. This big red is given a boast by gin, infused in house with Sichuan pepper, basil and pineapple. The Sichuan pepper helps to add depth to the cocktail without making it spicy and the pineapple provides a mild sweetness that doesn't overpower the nice dryness of the wine.

New York Sour, RMB 78

Ingredients: Cabernet Sauvignon, Bourbon whiskey, simple syrup

This was my favorite cocktail; it has all the punch of a whiskey based drink with the roundness of a Cabernet Sauvignon and the thick foam of a whiskey sour to add a bit of fun. I know a red wine and whiskey sour may sounds terrible, but it’s delicious! Trust me!

Bar No. 3

Address: 277 Xingguo Lu

Opening times: Daily, 11am-2am

Tel: 021 6418 2877

Bar No. 3 has been around for a while and when it comes to cocktails they really know how to bring it. They make unusual no frills attached cocktails at a good price point and they manage to constantly surprise us. The thing that originally drew me to Bar No. 3 was rumors of an IPA flavored cocktail. What could a cocktail hating beer drinker love more than a beer flavored cocktail?

Hopkins, RMB 85

Ingredients: Campari, Amaro Montenegro, hops-infused Pimms, tonic water

It smells like an IPA. It looks like an IPA (albeit a poor pour). But it’s not an IPA. The thick foamy head of this cocktail is incredible. I leaves you with a little foam moustache after every sip. It’s a little bitter and a little sweeter than a standard IPA and a whole lot stronger! This is the perfect cocktail for beer drinkers. It makes me feel like a football hooligan that’s been dragged into the middle classes and likes it.

Passion, RMB 85

Ingredients: Shiraz Malbec, lemon, Pisco, maple syrup, passion fruit

Passion is a feminine red wine based cocktail. It's punchy yet sweet with the fresh passion fruit juice perfectly balancing the flavour of the red wine. It's a fun and refreshing cocktail that's perfect for sipping and enjoying.

Muddy Water

Ingredients: orange bitters, Fireball whiskey, coffee-infused Vodka, Laphroaig

This is the perfect drink for whiskey drinkers and boy is it strong! It has all the class of an old fashioned, but the cinnamon flavors from the fireball and the coffee vodka add a unexpected twist, smoky and smooth at the same time. It’s a drink to be drunk very slowly and probably don’t have more than one. My colleague had a sip and said, "this will blow your f**king head off. It tastes like I’ve just kissed a pirate king." I really don’t think you can sum it up better than that.

Sober Company Café

Address: 99 Yandang Lu

Opening times: Mon-Fri, 10am-1am; Sat & Sun, 10am-2am

Tel: 021 5309 8261

If you don’t like cocktails but you love a coffee with a wee nip extra then Sober Company just the spot for you. Take a book and hang out in the downstairs café area. You can chill and sip away at your tipple of choice.

Bourbon Cappuccino RMB 65

Ingredients: Bourbon, espresso, steamed milk, maple syrup, orange rind

This is the best best best liqueur coffee I have ever had. I challenge any bar to rival this Bourbon Cappuccino. It was incredible so good it stirs one to poetry. It tastes like standing in a patch of sunshine on a cold winters day. The milk was foamy rich and sweet, the bourbon added the perfect bite and the whole thing smelt like whiskey and oranges. It’s the perfect drink for a cold winter’s day, pop in and have a cup with a friend to warm you up before the walk home.

Freddo Cointreau RMB 65

Ingredients: Cointreau, espresso, whipped milk

This cocktail is a cross between ice cream and a milk shake. I almost wanted to ask for a spoon. so thick that I almost asked for a spoon. It’s thick and creamy and delicate with a soft orange flavor from the Cointreau. The milk is so whipped it’s unbelievably light, I nearly threw the glass over my shoulder when I picked it up. It would make for the perfect dessert after brunch!

Vintage Pu’er Fizz

Ingredients: vintage pu'er tea infused rum, lime, clarified milk, soda

This milky cocktail looks as far from milk as possible, that’s because they mix milk with lime and allow the milk to curdle, then strain it.This means you have all of the milk flavor but the drink itself is clear. The pu’er infused rum is delicate and a little dangerous since it makes this cocktail soft and subtle and doesn’t taste alcoholic at all. So go steady!
