6 Moving Companies to Get You Through Apartment Hell

2018-01-21 AM ShanghaiWOWeng

Moving apartments can be a major headache. You will have useful junk, and maybe “useful for later” junk that all needs to be moved. But, as I have recently discovered there are plenty of companies that makes switching homes a breeze.

Whether you need, muscle power, a truck, or a super fancy all-inclusive package, there is a service that can get you out of out whatever kind of “moving hell” you may be knee deep in.

Challenge:

Find a moving company that can pack, unpack, hang artwork and be done within one day for a 137sq meter apartment in Xujiahui to north Jing’an.

(In case you are wondering, this is the ACTUAL photo of the current apartment and all the stuff that I own (minus some furniture) in it

FULL SERVICE

Packing & Unpacking, Storage, Transport

Trust Mover

Website: http://www.trustmover.com.cn

Offering both local and international relocation services, they are one of the more established moving companies in town with services extending outside of China.

Home Survey: They have a check-in list that they fill out in English and were able to provide a quote before leaving the apartment.

Estimated Moving time: 9 hours (9am to 6pm from packing to unpacking)

Manpower: 3 packers, 1 supervisor (4 people) for 60 multi-sized boxes

Extra Frills: They were able to provide a list of optional light maintenance service including hanging heavy artwork with drills and storage capabilities in their 3,000 sqm warehouse (Storage facilities: RMB 4 per day, per cbm)

Total Moving Quote (based on 15cbm): RMB 3,780 (without packing RMB 2,720) inclusive of a RMB 100 hanging fee, packing materials, manpower and transport fee

Deposit: RMB 3780

Overall takeaway: Seems to provide everything we need, impressive customer service and most importantly, I do not need to schedule another time for a maintenance man to come and hang my paintings. I can get everything done in one day!

ASI Movers

Website: http://asimovers.group-asi.com/

ASI Movers is one of the major moving operators in Shanghai. I have seen their boxes and moving cars in some residential compounds around town. They have an impressive portfolio boasting their own logistics operations and are fully equipped to offer relocation assistance whether it is an inter city move or international cities.

Home Survey: They are able to walk you through the on-day move experience, including what you need to do to communicate to the on-move supervisor to indicate which things stay and which things get moved. However, if you need a quote they cannot do it immediately.

Estimated Moving time: 7 hours (9am to 430pm from packing to unpacking)

Manpower: 4 packers and 1 supervisor to over see the move (5 people)

Extra Frills: Storage and hanging services (for light pieces only. For heavier pieces will require building maintenance to be present)

Total Moving Quote (based on 15.1cbm): RMB 4,200 inclusive of all packing material, manpower and transport fee

Deposit: No deposit

Overall takeaway: They seem to be a big company with years of experience. I liked that they did not charge a deposit fee, but overall the cost is considerably higher and will require more coordination with the new building maintenance, which could be a mafan.

BIG ONE MOVERS (Yue Na Jin Pin Banjia)

WeChat: BIGONEMOVERS2

Hotline: 400-008-5052

BIG ONE MOVERS was recommended via two friends who have used their services before. Promising Korean style service and professionalism, their big selling point is putting everything in its rightful place, to create the least disruption to the tenant.

Home Survey: Everything is check listed and itemized just like the other two moving companies.  They sit down to go through with you all the procedural work, including the licensing fee for the transportation vehicle.

Estimated Moving Time: 7 hours (9am to noon; 1pm to 4pm)

Manpower: 3 packers including 1 supervisor (4 people) 50 boxes (not including furniture)

Extra Frills: Will all arrange the furniture according including arranging bookcases and display cases according to how it was originally displayed.  Storage can also be offered in case the landlord’s furniture is very hideous (just for comparison a bed will cost RMB 200/month in storage)

Total Moving Quote (based on 15.1cbm): RMB 3,700 inclusive RMB 200 for car operation certification, moving within 10km (RMB 35 per extra km)

Deposit: RMB 500

Overall takeaway: Everything in the offer is the same as the other companies, but what is the point of ‘putting everything in its rightful place, with the least disruption to the tenant’ when your new apartment layout will be different than the existing apartment layout.  Unless you have your own furniture, it won’t be much of a needed service.

SWOT Moving

Website: www.youyouspace.com

I was recommended SWOT Moving from a group chat. They are storage specialists but also provide moving services.

Home Survey: Two people came to do the home survey, but unlike the other companies they went as far as taking photographs of the apartment and also items that needed to be moved. They were unable to provide quotation or any indication of price. Instead, they opted to WeChat me the quotation within 2 hours of the home visit.

Estimated Moving Time: 10am to when the job is done.

Manpower: 4-5 packers

Extra Frills: Can put things the way they are as long as it is similar to the existing apartment set up, can hang paintings as long as it does not require drilling into the wall.

Total Moving Quote (based on 15.1cbm): RMB 6,400 inclusive of packing material, manpower and transport fee.

Deposit: No deposit

Overall takeaway: OMG, they are taking photos of my stuff. My apartment. I never felt so exposed! AND, they are quoting me double the price of an international service because of their “packaging cost.” Not to mention, if you are a moving specialist you would be able to give an estimated moving time. No thank you. I am not impressed. Maybe they do a better job for storage than moving.

PACKING AND UNPACKING

Packing & Unpacking, Transport

Xiong Er Jia

WeChat:

Tel: 131-2232-5020

This was recommended via a WeChat group and they are a Chinese branch of a Korean moving company.

Home survey: One person came to do the survey and had not prepared any forms or checklist to count the items that needed moving.

Estimated Moving Time: Based on eyeballing the apartment, he estimated the moving time from 9am to 8pm. Two packers and one supervisor.

Frills: None. No hanging, no storage space. Will not move furniture at the new apartment, only the boxes.

Total Moving Quote (based on 15.1cbm): RMB 2,600 (inclusive of packing material, manpower and truck)

Overall takeaway: They seem like a no frills, methodical approach way to moving. He maneuvered my home like a breeze to provide the quote and moving volume. He came early. Only problem is, there is no storage for my new landlord’s ugly furniture.

TRANSPORT ONLY

Optional packing materials

This type of service is not within my scope, however it does not mean it should be shunned from the list, especially for people who just really need a big truck.

Da Zhong Banjia

Website: http://www.hkbrightech.com/products/22.htm

Tel: 021 6291 8188

If you don’t have much stuff, this is the one I would probably recommend. It is a simple booking of the truck. All you need is some strong friends to help you lift your stuff and load into the vehicle. If you need packing material, they will also provide at a cost.

Recommended you have a Chinese friend to help you communicate your moving needs and treat your moving friends for some beer and a nice dinner.

Hopefully my takeaways will be helpful for anyone looking for moving professionals or storage solutions to hide hideous landlord furniture.
