What is your winter dish recommendation?

Pure & Whole’s quinoa bowl (RMB 78)

Why is it healthy?

When the temperature drops, I love the Quinoa Bowl at Pure & Whole. This warm nourishing dish is a hearty combination of quinoa, avocado, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, pumpkin and more veggies, topped with a cashew miso dressing. Pumpkin is a grounding antioxidant-rich winter treat and Brussels sprouts offer a big dose of vitamin C and fiber. With quinoa as a base, your body can enjoy protein boost. The dish is nutrient dense and also very filling. It pairs very well with their Ginger Goji tea (RMB 20)!

Editor’s Note: You can find the tea Elizabeth is recommending on the Pure & Whole menu listed as “Ginger Town.”

In winter time, I recommend Tribe’s All-in Smoked Tofu whole grain bowl (RMB 68). I love the combo of all these plant-based ingredients like sautéed tofu, avocado, carrot and edamame.

Why is it healthy?

It’s warm and a great source of fiber, protein and unsaturated fat! Last but not least, it’s very tasty and satisfying.

Clay pot tea-cooked chicken (RMB 45) and roasted cauliflower (RMB 16) at Grandma’s Home (外婆家 , Wai Po Jia).

Why is it healthy?

In TCM theory, winter meals should be cooked, energetically warming, and nourishing to help battle the cold weather and replenish the essence. Winter is the season of Kidney Water, so because this dish is soaked in green tea and goji berries it specifically moistens the kidneys and warms up the digestive system to aid in easier digestion. The cauliflower is energetically sweet and goes to the Earth element while also nourishing the lungs to protect from getting a cold or the flu. It’s important to eat seasonally to keep a balanced connection to the environment and weather.

Take Me to Taipei (RMB 68)

This Taiwanese tomato beef noodle soup is a new winter menu item at ban ban by Sproutworks.

Why is it healthy?

I'm a big fan of ban ban's customizable bowls and their new hot dishes this season are fantastic: rich in spices and layers of flavor. The Take Me to Taipei 带我去台北 (68RMB) is a soba noodle soup with tender beef chunks in an aromatic broth with a blend of Chinese and Western spices including star anise, cinnamon, tomato, ginger, onion, a touch of red chili plus peppercorn and dry white wine.

It's healthy because it's based on a beef bone broth, one of the healthiest elixirs for a happy gut and caring for your beneficial bacteria. Plus, soba noodles are more digestible than wheat noodles and they have no gluten. The blend of spices are also rich with antioxidants.

What is your winter dish recommendation?

Radish Cooked in Radish Soup with Shiitake Mushrooms and Tofu Skin (RMB 88) at WUJIE or I’ll make a simple miso soup at home with lots of radish and wakame.

Why is it healthy?

There’s an old Chinese saying, “eating radish in the winter and ginger in the summer will keep the doctor away.” ( 冬吃萝卜夏吃姜,不用医生开药方) Radish is a seasonal ingredient that has many health benefits including improving digestion, detoxing the liver, ridding the body of excess water “dampness”, and overall boosting our immune system (a half cup of radish is nearly 15% of our recommended daily intake of vitamin C).

What winter foods do you recommend?

In view of Traditional Chinese Medicine  (TCM), winter is a energy storing season and related to the kidney. It’s the time to tonify your body. Stem and root vegetables such as sweet potato, carrot, taro, potato, yam, cabbage, purple cabbage, Chinese cabbage and broccoli are winter foods. Black rice, black bean, black sesame seeds and other nuts are necessary, especially for vegan/vegetarian people.

However, what you should eat depends on your body type. If you always feel cold, especially cold in feet and hands, then you should eat some lamb and beef (once a week), or walnut, cash nut, Chinese date, ginger if you are a vegetarian/vegan. Warm soups are also good choices. These groups of people should avoid eating cold or raw food such as raw vegetables, green tea, mung bean, etc.

If you always feel hot, especially hot in your palm and sole, you should eat Chinese yam, daikon radish, black rice, black sesame seeds, apple, fresh vegetables, etc. You should limit to these warm foods such as beef, lamp, chicken, and avoid hot&spicy foods.

By the way, it’s better to prepare these food/herbs to prevent and treat cold/cough in winter time. Ginger, brown sugar, perilla leaves, tangerine peel, daikon radish. (Then you really don’t need other medicine.)

What restaurant do you recommend when you aren’t cooking at home?

Customizable Thai Bowl (RMB 68)

Actually, most Wagas dishes are healthy, and the flavor is ok. I like the salad and spinach wrap. Among these, the mixed vegetable and the chicken salad are good in winter. Salmon salad is also good. They have black rice in their main dish for example the salmon main dish. Heat type people can eat, but not very suitable for cold type people.

Theo Martin

Theo of Flotasian Float Spa is very conscientious about his overall diet and prepares the bulk of his meals at home.

Tell us about your customized eating plan?

This last 6 month I have followed a diet that is highly customized for me based on my genes. (We sell those DNA-tests at the spa btw.). I need to watch out for carbs and saturated fats and need extra of cruciferous vegetables, omega-3 and antioxidants. I can't eat most of the meals normal restaurant offers. Therefore I either order my meals from restaurants where you can customize your meals or I prepare them by myself.

A normal meal for me usually consists of fish, broccoli, leafy greens, kiwi or grapefruit, some kind of meat, avocado and eggs.

My goal is to get as much energy as possible from my meals during day time. After experimenting during this last 6 month this diet is the one that gives me the most energy and keep me productive during the day. My evening meal is not always as healthy. It´s all about balance!

What is your winter dish recommendation?

A warming plant based vegetable lentil stew or chickpea vegetable coconut curry served over brown rice.

Why is healthy?

Lentils and chickpeas pack a plant-based protein punch and is a great alternative to making these traditionally meat-based dishes.  Protein is important for building muscle, whilst using coconut milk as a base for a warming curry, provides serious flavor, and healthy fats which help with satiety – that cozy full feeling.  Brown rice is a complex carb that also aids the feeling of fullness, as well as providing necessary fibre for a healthy gut, and it helps replace our glycogen stores to fuel your next workout.  Between these and plenty of veggies to reach our 5+ a day (such as carrots, green beans, broccoli, sweet potato and spinach) you get a well-balanced, nutritional, tasty meal without feeling like you’ve had to compromise on the fun factor of food when you’re looking to eat well and stay healthy. If I am short on time, a veggie based soup, that is quick and easy – think broccoli pea soup, an orange soup (my fave is ginger, carrot, pumpkin and sweet potato).

Where do you eat when you aren’t in Kelly’s Kitchen?

Tribe has a variety of breakfast options beginning at RMB 48

When I’m not cooking my own meals you can find me using some great time savers like Kate & Kimi’s black bean burger or readymade salmon patties that I can pair with their couscous, edamame or broccoli. For a quick healthy meal, I’m often at TRIBE taking advantage of their BOGO breakfast deals on Thursdays.

Fish and Chips at Hooked start at RMB 98 for a special treat

And I’m a sucker for Hooked Fish & Chips at least once a fortnight!

Marinated Sweet and Sour Burdock stuffed with Lion’s Mane Mushroom (RMB 78) at WUJIE.

Why is it healthy?

It's seasonal- burdock is a winter root vegetable, wonderful for grounding, calming energy and super high in fiber. I cook burdock myself but I am impressed how soft & tender and delicious they make this dish and filled with mushrooms.
