6 Ways to Be a Better You This Year

2018-01-28 ShanghaiWOWeng

New year, new you, right? Most of us make some kind of resolutions in January, only to give up by February. Instead, try these simple habit changes to start making yourself and your life better.

Declutter

We all have too many Taobao purchases lying around that we’ll use ‘someday’. Do yourself a favor and start the year off by ridding your living space of things you don’t need. Start with your closet – what haven’t you worn in ages? Then take out the trash, recycle old magazines and mail, and donate kitchen utensils and tools. If you’re not sure where to take them, Green Initiatives has several donation boxes around the city for clothing and fabric donations through their Fiber Project Initiative, as well as boxes for recycling things like cables, batteries, and electronics. More information can be found on their website.

If you dare to take the de-cluttering to the next level, take a look at your social media life and electronic files. Clear your computer and phone of any unnecessary files and photos, and purge your social networks. How many people are you connected with on WeChat that you’ve never even talked to? While you’re at it, make sure your electronics are up to date on safety scans and updates.

Move

Humans are animals, and animals are meant to move! No matter your fitness level, physique, schedule, or salary, there IS an option in Shanghai to move in some way. If you’re short on time, try committing to one workout a week, or even taking walking lunch breaks and meetings. Give MoveShanghai or GuavaPass a try to find your next workout obsession, or join FitFam for free workouts with built in friends. Working out regularly can improve your circulation, energy, skin, and mood, as well as your overall well-being.

Learn Something

When was the last time you took a class, or learned a new skill? Sites like Coursera, FutureLearn, and Udemy have free courses on SO many topics. Or, download an app like Duolingo or Memrise to brush up on some language skills or even learn a new one. Most of us know that our Chinese skills could be a little better, so maybe that’s something you want to focus on this year. As a wise professor once told me, if you’re not learning, you’re dying – so get to work!

Slow Down

With the Shanghai hustle we all forget that we need breaks and enough rest. At a biological level, sleep and rest are integral to our well-being. So the next time your boss asks you to work overtime, remember rest and sleep as a priority. To do this, try and get home at a reasonable time, set a bedtime, and commit to it. Try one of the great venues in Shanghai that offers meditation, like Zenergy or Octave. Your body and mind will thank you.

Drink More Water

This might seem self-explanatory, but most adults don’t drink enough water. The benefits of drinking enough water include increasedenergy, weight loss, flushing out toxins, an improved complexion, boosting your immune system, and energizing your muscles, to name a few. You can start to incorporate this habit by drinking a glass of water when you wake up, and before meals. Do like the Americans do and get yourself a sexy re-usable bottle (make sure it’s BPA free) to become your new daily companion, and try to drink at least a liter of water a day.

Be Kinder

With everything going on in the world, we could all use a bit more kindness. This year, try to be more kind to others, as well as yourself. Hold doors open for others, wait in line, and try to generally be a good human. Also, try and be nicer to yourself – we are often our own harshest critics. Give some good karma to yourselves and others and try to be a force for good.
