F&B News Bites

2018-01-31 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

The first month of 2018 has been full of movement in the F&B industry. We know because we’ve been running around like crazy people to cover as much of it as humanly possible for you, our loyal readers.

One of the city’s longest running bakeries, Bastiaan, has been purchased by newer power player, BREAD etc. Bastiaan began as a small, family owned bakery in 2006 before growing to supply many of the city’s restaurants and grocery stores with their B2B operations. Bread etc. is currently working on changing out equipment and their head baker Xiao Dong is in control and updating the Bastiaan recipes. They have more than 300 bread items available and you can contact them for orders at bastiaanbakery@bastiaanbakery.com or wechat id: bastiaan-bakery.

The group has big plans for Bastiaan. While they will keep the B2B business under that name, they will also be launching a retail brand called Witty Wheat, which will focus on a young, fun bakery brand aimed at Chinese consumers with the same high-quality baking standards as Bread etc. Expect European style breads with Chinese flavors.

In other Bread etc. news they  will switch to coffee Bonomi soon, a coffee brand with 150 years of history.

Over at Found 158, some new venues have appeared such the long awaited new location of Bombay Bistro and megaclub TAXX. A soft opened bar called Ballers has also opened, promising a mix of hip-hop and beer pong. I suppose that’s where to go to find our long awaited baller boyfriend? I also recently found out that Cyclo has late hours until 4am on both Saturday and Sunday (2am all other nights), meaning you can go for after-club pho! So if you have to leave Found 158 without finding your baller, at least you won’t be hungry (for food).

A second branch of Brut Cake Café has opened on Zhaojiabang Lu and I hear that a third location is currently in the works. Expect more growth on this front as the café was recently purchased by China F&B Group, owners of other small businesses you may have heard of such as Papa John’s and Dairy Queen

Shanghai’s malls are hosting more and more restaurants, so there’s a lot going on such as the new Al’s Place in K11. They are doing tapas sized versions of some of our favorite Al’s Diner dishes, as well as some original recipes. Being able to order mini pancakes is the best thing ever, IMHO.

Over in Pudong, the IFC Mall is home to two new concepts: The Butcher’s Club (Michelin burgers from HK) and Galleria (where fine dining meets art). See 'related articles' below for the full scoop on the latter.

New mall, Sunny Walk at the West Bund is home to French steak house Entrecôte, which we covered recently. There are a ton of other openings in that mall such as: Moli Barbeque (Japanese style), Shua Chuan (Sichuan food for Shanghai tastes), Lan Ting Fang (HK Cha Canting), Café Ming Qian (coffee shop) and more!

In fast food news, branches of Taco Bell in Feng Sheng Li and Wujiaochang have both opened in Puxi as well as a branch of delicious California burger chain The Habit, located in Fuxing SOHO

In addition to Sproutworks closing and The Milkshake Bar rebranding to PIRO over on Changshu Lu, a new Cantonese restaurant, Shang Yue Lou quietly opened at the end of last year. PIRO is serving a greatest hits menus from previous ventures: PIRO, Dos Locos, Captain Rooster, Baobei Noodle Bar and The Milkshake Bar. We don’t ever want to hear you say that you are craving a bowl of noodles with a milkshake and a side of fried chicken but don’t know where to go, over again.

Notable closings include the Dagu Lu location of Café de Stagiares, crazy burger joint OH.MY.BURGER. and Brad Turley’s Market 101 on Changle Lu which has become a New York Style Pizza joint. The good news is you can still get the sandwiches on Sherpa’s as they are being made in the Goga kitchen now as well as making the delivery of New York Style Pizza faster for people in that area.

Last but not least, changes at the Healthy Hub on Shaanxi Lu are complete, which means that Happy Buddha and Sprout Lifestyle have done a switcheroo. This gives Sprout Lifestyle  more space for special events, including their stellar cooking classes, and puts vegan comfort food on ground level for easy access. Lizzy’s Smoothies still available on first floor with now change.
