China in A Week: Where to Go & What To See

2018-02-08 Joshua Bunnell ShanghaiWOWeng

Recently my sister and a friend came to visit me and my humble life here in the PRC. They explained how they wanted to do the basic things: see the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, the Bund & Shanghai Tower, and apart from that they were open to trying my own recommendations. Having visited all of these places before I felt confident I could organize a fun trip for the lot of us.

However, when planning their itinerary I was informed the total duration of their stay would be a mere SEVEN days. 168 Hours to achieve all that they wanted to achieve seemed like a nightmare coming into my reality. Nevertheless, I planned the trip as detailed below, and with only a few minor hiccups we did manage to see everything on their lists along with some of my own preferences as well.

The following is an itinerary to go through China in one week:

Beijing – Two Days

Day One:

  • Arrive at Beijing Airport

  • Go to Hotel to shower and prepare for the day.

  • There’s no time for jetlag.

  • Grab lunch on Meishi Road (location of our Hotel), just a hop, skip and a jump from Tiananmen Square.

  • Go to Tiananmen.

  • Go to Forbidden City.

  • Beijing Duck for Dinner (also on Meishi Road).

  • Go to small beer bar for drinks and head back to hotel early.

Day Two:

  • Depart hotel 6AM. Take Uber (not Didi; Hate Didi’s app) to Great Wall (Mutianyu)

  • Climb the Great Wall in the rain. It just had to rain today.

  • Climb to the last available tower at Mutianyu, it’s a personal triumph everytime.

  • Watch sister & friend take 5,000,000 selfies with a selfie stick on the Great Wall.

  • Wonder what the Chinese foot soldiers defending Mongol invaders would think of this.

  • Climb down the Great Wall. Enjoy hot chocolate to warm up a bit.

  • Call an Uber to take us from Great Wall to Wangfujing. Lunch at Wanfujing.

  • Go back to Hotel. Grab bags and check out.

  • Go to Beijing South Station for our night train to Xi’an.

Xi’an – One Day

  • Arrive in Xi’an in the morning of next day. Go to hotel.

  • Shower, eat breakfast, and take a deep breath.

  • Leave hotel for the hour long journey to the Terracotta Warriors.

  • Roughly two – hours spent at Terracotta Warriors. Eat small lunch there.

  • Back to the city and head to the Muslim Quarter.

  • Have massive delicious meal of barbeque, Biang Biang noodles, and the Chinese Hamburger (rou jia mo)

  • Go through the Muslim Quarter, help sister & friend barter for souvenirs, etc.

  • Get Fish Foot Massage. (little fishes eat the dead skin off your feet)

  • After the afternoon’s massive meal, dinner is simple street food snacks.

  • Back to hotel to gather strength.

  • Go to Defu Alley (with some old friends and coworkers; applicable if you use to live in Xi’an).

  • Go to KTV at 3AM. BAD IDEA

  • Go back to Hotel at 5AM. Don’t sleep.

  • Train at 9AM to Nanjing. Sleep the entire train ride.

Nanjing – One Day

  • Arrive at Nanjing South Station.

  • Go to hotel near Xiangwu Lake (conveniently named Xiangwu Lakeview Hotel)

  • Shower, take three deep breaths, and meet in the lobby.

  • Walk around Xiangwu Lake. Absolutely beautiful scenery.

  • Go to Lion’s Bridge Pedestrian Street for dinner.

  • Ellen’s bar for some light drinking / hookah. Still recovering from Xi’an.

  • Back to hotel to grab bags. Go to train station.

  • Lunch at Nanjing South while waiting for afternoon train to Hangzhou.

Hangzhou – One Day (my home)

  • Arrive at Hangzhou East Station same evening. I’m finally home. Yay!

  • Go to my apartment to drop off bags and relax. Dinner at home.

  • Drinks with co-workers & friends at nearby bar.

  • Exhaustion begins to take over. Head home early and sleep like a baby.

  • Wake up next morning 9AM. Breakfast at home.

  • Set-out to see West Lake at 10AM.

  • Visit The Broken Bridge, and walk around the outskirts of the lake.

  • At noon have lunch at The Kerry Center (@ Midtown Brewery in Shangri-La)

  • Uber from Kerry Center to Longjin Village to walk through the Tea fields.

  • Uber home from the other end of the tea fields.

  • Grabs bags and head to Hangzhou Station for evening train to Shanghai.

Shanghai – Two Days

  • Arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao. Go to Hotel near Zhongshan Park.

  • Shower, take five deep breaths. It’s almost over.

  • Head to dinner at Sichuan Citizen. BASIL DROPS are so delicious.

  • After dinner drinks at Parrot. God I love their Negroni.

  • Back to hotel to sleep. Busy day tomorrow.

  • Wake up at 8AM for hotel breakfast. Check out of hotel but leave bags there.

  • Set out to the Bund!

  • Walk around the Bund, take cheesy photos, and go across the river to see the Pearl Tower.

  • Haven’t been to the top of the Pearl Tower since 2014, it’s alright.

  • Go back across the river and head to Yuyuan Gardens.

  • Help sister & friend buy full tea sets in the street market there.

  • Walk through the gardens.

  • Lunch at Yuyuan Gardens. Shanghai Dumplings yo.

  • Head back to Hotel. Grab bags.

  • Head to Hongqiao Airport.

  • Say ZAIJIAN!
