Five Baijiu Brands To Impress Local Friends & Family

2018-02-15 ShanghaiWOWeng

Honestly, agreeing to drink baijiu with your local friends and family is already fun enough for them. However, if you want to go a step further into your assimilation, you can try to associate what brand of baijiu you buy as a gift, or suggest at dinner, with the region of the country you are in. Every province / city will have baijiu well known and/or originating from their area, and as you can imagine people get quite proud of this. Here’s a quick region-based guide to picking up your next bottle of this “delightful” spirt.

西凤酒 Xīfèngjiǔ

Xifengjiu, translated as “Western Wind Wine” is from Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. A popular mid-ranged baijiu on the more affordable side compared to industry leaders like Maotai. Xifengjiu does still offer a sense a pride to Xi’an natives, making it the drink of choice for many locals (particularly during the CNY). Needless to say, if you’re looking to impress friends from Shaanxi, pick up a reasonably priced bottle of Xifengjiu to knock their socks off.

五粮液 Wǔliángyè

Originating from Yibin, Sichuan Province, Wuliangye is on the higher end of the spectrum, often considered to be compared with China’s famous Maotai. Wuliangye features lasting flavors, along with that lasting fire in your throat we all love. If you’ll be spending any time with friends / family from Chengdu or anywhere else in Sichuan, Wuliangye is a good bet to place when it comes to drink selection. Pick up a bottle of this on your way and prepare to be appreciated.

二锅头 Èrguōtóu

Erguotou is an infamous baijiu brand originating from the nation's beautiful capital in Beijing. While you may be familiar with the RMB 3 version of the brand, rest assured that there are high-quality ranges of this spirit for those who are looking to not die. For Beijingers, Erguotou is a classic, regardless of quality or price.

古井贡酒 Gǔjǐng gòng jiǔ

Gujing Gongjiu comes from our not so close neighbor, Anhui. Perhaps one of the oldest baijiu’s in China, Gujing originated before 200 A.D. and was considered a “drink of tribute for many of China’s Imperial Dynasties! Needless to say, this is a good option if you plan on visiting friends who live near or around (or just in the same province as) Yellow Mountain.

洋河大曲Yang He Da Qu

Yang He Da Qu comes from Jiangsu province and is dated as far back as the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is certainly a national brand, while lacking in reputation / fame compared to the beginning members of this list. Either way, if you’ll be spending time in Nanjing, Suzhou, or maybe even the beautiful Yangzhou, then Yang He Da Qu is a considerably good baijiu choice for you.
