3 Unique Ways To Tour Shanghai: Bikes, Ghosts and Food

2018-02-23 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

Shanghai is an awesome city to go exploring, especially as we get closer to spring. If you think you've already done all the solo investigating that you can, perhaps you should sign up for a tour? Or maybe you have family in town and need to send them off while you get some well-deserved downtime? We've rounded up some of our favorite tour providers below.

Culture Shock Bike Tours Shanghai

In 2015 a group of young entrepreneurs set upon starting an alternative to the standard tourist tours that were available. They ended up with tours run by experienced bilingual guides leading multi-theme and off the beaten path tours of the city including parts that are rapidly disappearing as the city modernizes. They will take you on adventure to meet the inhabitants of Shanghai for some once in a lifetime interactions.

The tours are conducted on lovingly restored vintage fixed gear bikes. When you begin your tour you will be given a quick orientation to learn about the bike and road safety. Expect stops along the way to visit restaurants and food vendors so you can taste local food as you go. You will also visit a traditional Chinese medicine market and sample local food such as dumplings and skewers.

Prices: US$70-85

You have two options for tours: Good Morning Shanghai and Shanghai By Night. The morning tour begins as the sun rises over one of the world’s most amazing skylines. Highlights are coffee and pastries in the Former French Concession, Art Deco Villas, learning Tai Chi in the park, sampling Shanghai breakfast delicacies and exploring the Old Town. Shanghai By Night is all about winding your way through the narrow Old Town lanes and enjoying the bright Bund lights.

Newman Tours

While Newman Tours has lots of tours available in several Chinese cities (Shanghai, Beijing and Xian), they have made a name for themselves with their unique Ghost Tours. Join them for a night unlike most others while you learn about Chinese superstition and enjoy (we hear of some surprises) a good old fashioned fright!

Tour highlights include asking the Jing’an Temple guardian lions to ask for protection against the evil spirits of the night and entering the depths of a dark grotto to find the Mad Abbot of the Bubbling Well. You will also experience the Chinese tradition of inviting the dead to the dinner table and having your fortune read by Chinese gods. It’s not all ghosts and poltergeists though, you will also get the chance to learn ancient Chinese water calligraphy and learn how the emperors dealt with traitors.

And if ghosts aren’t your thing, check out their website for info about Kung Fu, Gangster, Jewish Ghetto tours and more. Pricing varies depending on number of guests and you may either join already scheduled tours or request private tours.

Prices: RMB 330-1320 depending on number of guests and type of tour

UnTour Shanghai

Each and every tour you go one with UnTour Shanghai is a well-researched and tested exploration of local food. The groups are small and intimate and lead by knowledgeable, friendly and bilingual tour guides. Expect to eat at anywhere from three to six stops which will be the equivalent of one very large meal. Be sure to pace yourself although the walks between stops are sure to help you make more room.

The Hands on Dumpling Delights tour is perfect for the dumpling aficionado as you will get off the beaten path to try dumplings from all over China before learning how to create your own har gow shrimp dumpling masterpieces.

The Shanghai Street Eats Breakfast tour includes 10+ local breakfast dishes such as fresh soymilk with youtiao (fried dough) and steaming baskets of xiaolongbao (soup dumplings).  You’ll also get to go to a traditional wet market, check out a local park and wind your way through the Former French Concession. It is sure to be a productive and delicious city tour.

If you prefer your tours with alcohol, we highly recommend the very fun evening tours where you will taste baijiu and have beers along with food from around the country including Cantonese, Sichuan, and Xinjiang stops plus the best roujiamou (Chinese meat bun) we have had in Shanghai. Or go all out and book a Night Market Wine Pairing tour with made in China wines from Grace Vineyards, Kanaan Winery and Chateau Hansen. This tour is adults only FYI.

Prices: Adults US$75-95, Children US$37.5-42.5 depending on tour
