Cheap Eats: 3am Hidden Breakfast Street

2018-02-24 ShanghaiWOWeng

In Shanghai’s Yangpu district, there’s a hidden street that comes to life even morning at 3am. You can get rice balls, rice cakes, soups, and plenty of other yummy treats to start your (very early) day off right. All the stalls are closed at 9am, so the early bird really does catch the worm here.

Hugely Popular Breakfast Street

You may be one of those people that think breakfast is just a luxury for lazy days when you actually have time to prepare it, but this street may just change your mind.

There are around a dozen stalls in total, some of which have been going strong for over 20 years! They all open at 3am and close at 9am (or 10am on the weekends). And yes, customers really do start rolling in at 3! One of the best parts of it is you can see the food being made fresh.

If that’s not good enough for you, every stall has a business licence and a health certificate.

A Whole Street of Breakfast

米饭饼 (mifanbing) - Rice Cake

The Old Shanghainese get ever so excited when they see a rice cake being made, as it often times reminds them of their childhood. The chefs here are very adept at the skill, able to make a delicious rice cake in no time at all.

It’s still warm when you eat it, and the rice cake’s savoury flavour pairs perfectly with a sweet 油条 youtiao - deep-fried dough stick).

大肠肺头粉丝汤 (dachang feitou fensi tang) - Large Intestines and Lungs Noodle Soup

This particular item is possibly one of the most delicious on the whole street. The stall even offers a little indoor seating area. All the meat is very clean and well-handled, and in these chilly times a hot bowl of soup is just what you need!

锅贴 (guotie) - Fried Dumpling

This is yet another hugely popular dish, with options for both meat-lovers and veggies alike. Once a pan of dumplings has been fried, they go pretty quickly!

Watching the steam pour off these beauties is enough to make anyone’s mouth water...

Fried dumplings’ skin is perfect and crispy with a hint of juice spilling out of the middle as you take your first bite.

早餐奶 (zaocannai) - Breakfast Milk

There’s a good variety of dairy products here, from milk to yogurt and even tea eggs. You can even find the old favourite cocoa milk here, which is pretty rare these days.

粢饭糕、黄金锅巴 (cifangao, huangjin guoba) - Sweet Rice Cake, Golden Rice Crust

Deep-fried golden dough sticks, sweet golden rice cakes and golden rice crust all come straight from the pan, making them especially hot and crispy.

炝饼 (qiangbing) - Boiled Flatcake

The flatcake here is particularly thick and extra crispy, while maintaining a nice chewy texture. It’s one of the most savoury items on the street, so pair it with a cup of sweet soy milk.

粢饭团 (cifantuan) - Glutinous Rice Balls

These glutinous rice balls can be purchased in either black or white. Most people prefer the sweet version, which comes with added sugar and a deep-fried dough stick inside.

蜂糕 (fenggao) - Steamed Sponge Cake

These steamed sponge cakes are filled with raisins and are incredibly sweet. They are super filling.

鸡蛋饼+葱油饼 (jidanbing + congyoubing) - Egg Pancake + Scallion Oil Pancake

Scallion oil pancakes and egg pancakes are some of the most popular breakfast and snack foods in Shanghai. Add a sausage, a few extra eggs, some sweet sauce and you’re good to go!

The prices are all very reasonable. You won’t pay more than RMB 15 for a full meal.
