5 Drinks to Wet Your Whistle this Month

2018-02-27 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

Post spring festival we have all been out of town on our holibobs, or stuck in Shanghai drowning our sorrows. Either way it's a great excuse to throw yourself into Shanghai's bar scene, reaquaint yourself in cocktail heaven or continue the binge. Here are my favourite cocktails of the month that can help you do just that!

Rum For Your Life @ Hooked

Address: 158 Julu Lu

Not only is this cocktail, Rum For Your Life (RMB 55), super beautiful, it’s also delicious! If you’re in the mood for summer then order this drink and sit next to the heater. Shut your eyes, take a sip and pretend you’re floating in the Bahamas. It’s a rum based drink that is sweet and fruity and deceptively strong. Go careful with this one!

Caipassion @ Boteco

Address: 158 Julu Lu

The Caipassion (RMB 65) at Boteco is a Caipirinha to be talked about. Made with fresh passion fruit and lime, it’s punchy and fresh. The passion fruit adds a sweetness that helps to balance the Cachaça. Again this is a drink you need to tread carefully around, a few of these will blow your socks off.

Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic, G’vine Gin & Tonic @ Kru

Address: 199 Hengshan Lu

The gin and tonics (RMB 78 for both) at Kru are from their sparkling wine inspired cocktail list and they will blow your mind. The G’vine Gin and tonic is full of subtle flavours that compliment the gin rather that overpowering it. The thyme and juniper berries compliment the G’vine and help to pull out all the flavours. It’s super refreshing and worth heading to Yongping Lane to try it out.

Jasmine Swizzle @ Sober Cafe

Address: 99 Yandang Lu

The Jasmine Swizzle (RMB 65) at Sober Café makes me long for summer. You want to be sitting in the shade wearing a straw hat and reading your book. It’s made from jasmine infused rum and lemon stock. It sounds so simple but the flavor is incredible! It’s floral without being flowery and sweet without being too sugary.

Basil Drop @ Sichuan Citizen

Address: 30 Donghu Lu

Find me a Shanghai Expat who hasn’t tried a Basil Drop at Sichuan Citizen. This cocktail has been kick around since the dawn of mankind but it deserves some attention. Walk into Sichuan Citizen on any given night and you will see nearly ever guest sipping on  a bright green basil drop. Why? BECAUSE THEY’RE AMAZING. They taste like savory yet sweet basily heaven. If you haven’t tried it yet it’s not too late to jump on the Basil Drop train.
