Improve Your Cocktail Photos with Tips from an Expert

2018-03-03 Ryan ShanghaiWOWeng

More people than ever are drinking cocktails in Shanghai, which means of course that more people than ever are photographing drinks in Shanghai. But most soon discover that it’s pretty difficult to make your drink look like it does in magazines and on websites, we asked an expert for some tips on how it’s done.

What’s the first thing you think about when you’re about to take a drink photo?

Lighting. Proper lighting is always the key to make everything pop.

What do you think makes a drink photo good or bad?

Well the lighting is important, but often times the angle you use is a major factor in how good the photo turns out.

Are some drinks easier than others to take photos of? Why?

I’m not sure it’s easier, but I think transparentc/clearone like martinis or gin tonics often turn out a bit more beautifully. They absorb and reflect a lot of the light hitting them and easily stand out in the dark—shining bright like a diamond.

What are three tips you can give on taking a perfect drink photo?

If you are doing it with your cell phone, my first advice is — DO NOT RELY ON FILTERS TOO MUCH. Some filters will change the original color of the drink. It’s important to preserve their basic reality.

Beautifying the pictures is also a matter of significance. Try to only adjust the basic of a picture, like brightness and contrast. You’ll see the changes by yourself.

Considering it’s more convenient to take photos with your phone when you are just hanging out with friends, I’d say try some apps to make your pictures better.

Do you drink EVERY drink you photograph?

Every now and then I drink them all. But usually I just sip to get an idea of what's going on inside.

What’s your favorite drink photo you’ve ever taken?

I take pictures basically every day, so my favorite one is always changing depending on when you ask me. Here is my favorite this week—

If you could take a photo of any drink at any place in the world where would it be?

New York! I’ve followed a lot of bars’ Instagram accounts that are based there. I was there recently but I had to leave before I had time to go to some of the bars I was hoping to visit, hopefully next time!
