Splurge, Save, Steal: Big Burgers for all Budgets

2018-03-12 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

Burgers are a big business in Shanghai with nearly everyone in on the buy-one-get-one game. But what is a person to do if they want a high-quality burger at a fair price when it’s not BOGO day? We have put together a few options to help you maximize those Maos and get what you pay for whether you want to splurge, save or steal.

Splurge (Above RMB 100):

Morton’s Grille

This category is basically the all-American steakhouse burger and Morton’s is one of the originals. Sink your teeth into the double stacked “Ravenous Style Burger” (RMB 138 plus 10% service charge). Two patties of Australian beef are grilled with mustard then topped with two slices of American cheese, grilled onion, hand torn lettuce, tomato, pickles and special sauce. Served with shoestring fries.

The BREW

While loaded with toppings including bacon, mushrooms and cheese, the

Brewery Burger (RMB 115 exclusive of 10% service charge and prevailing

government taxes) is all about the beef. You can depend on the fact that the meat is the same quality as the steaks from The MEAT. When you are in the mood for ground Aussie steak, this is where you go. With 30% fat in this mix, you can order well done and still end up with a burger that gets all over the place in the best possible way.

Shanghai Slim’s

Over at Slim’s they do an exceptional steakhouse burger made from USDA prime beef that is ground on the premises. The blend includes between 25-30% fat for a rich, tasty patty. Feel free to spruce it up with extras like chili, but we are more than happy with it as is. And as is means two cheeses (American and blue), bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and a side of fries. Our team of taste testers rated it “Best Overall” regardless of price. RMB 120, if you are curious.

Save (between RMB 51-RMB 100):

Butchers Club

The burgers The Butchers Club, a fairly new kid on the block, are on the expensive side of middle range. Since they don’t have a service charge and come in under RMB 100 we are going to call this a save. The burgers,, which are a mix of brisket, rump and chuck, are dry aged over 14 days, which accounts for approximately 20% loss of product yet results in a concentrated beef flavor and fat that renders seamlessly for a succulent burger experience. The classic burger above will run you RMB 90 (not including fries).

Grinder

The classic cheese and beef (RMB 58) at Grinder comes with a side of fries (or salad if you so choose) and is a pretty decent choice for this price. The cheese has that authentic American waxiness and all other fixings are traditional standards: lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. We appreciate the toastiness of the bun. Grinder is best described as a gourmet version of a fast food burger.

New York Style Steak & burger

The Big Boy (RMB 68) comes close to a steakhouse burger at 40% of the cost. They use a half pound of Angus beef which is grilled with sea salt, black pepper and nothing else. We appreciate when beef tastes like beef, so are happy they do not over season. The outer char on the burger gives a nice smoky flavor and the Russian dressing plus cheddar cheese, lettuce, pickle, grilled onion and tomato is classic. They do have more dressed up options on the menu if cheese-stuffed patties or lamb sound good to you.

Steal (RMB 50 and below)

Fatburger

While not the cheapest or the best burger in this category, Fatburger earns the distinction of tasting like you imagine an American style fast casual burger should taste. Order either a Baby Fat (RMB 30) or a single (RMB 45) and add RMB 5 for cheddar. Toppings are standard and mustard is applied with a heavy hand. They are cooked to order and juicy.

Charlie’s Burger

Charlie’s Burger is Shanghai’s answer to big international fast food chains and they do tasty, cheap burgers that have saved us after countless hangovers because they deliver through both Sherpa’s and Eleme. A single patty cheeseburger is just RMB 35 which is hard to beat and the patty has just the right balance of meat to grease with melty cheese. The square buns are baked in-house.

The Habit Burger

Now we might have saved the best for last, because The Habit’s simple charburger (RMB 29, RMB 6 for cheese) is our pick for best value for money. It is made to order, char grilled and  served simply with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, mayo and pickles. Even though the Santa Barbara chain slings fast burgers, they grind them in-house for a solid yet juicy burger that we can not get enough of. We are probably lucky we don’t live nearby, because it would be hard to pass up.
