5 Japanese Restaurants You Need in Your Life

2018-03-14 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

Shanghai’s residents love Japanese food, from super traditional to the new modern. These days we love Xime for dinner with friends and are newly enamored of yakitori spot, Torishou. Contemporary UMI, which just opened in HK Taikoo Hui, has our attention. Still, we haven’t lost love for some of the most famous rice at one of most beautiful villas at Shari. For can’t be beat home style fusion (it’s a thing), Inno Dining is still top of our list. Read on for more info and photos. We know you love photos. Wink.

Shari

Shari is tucked in a majestic, dated mansion in the heart of the Former French Concession area on Yongjia Lu. Their menu covers an extensive number of styles with a hint of fusion thrown in the mix – very ambitious but works incredibly well. A while back we asked some of Shanghai’s Japanese expatriate community to recommend their favorite Japanese haunts, and Shari was mentioned more than once for their amazing rice and big garden.

Torishou

It just so happens we did a full-on review for this amazing spot yesterday (you can find it in our 'Related Articles' section), but it's well worth mentioning again here. As you step through the unassuming front door of Torishou, you’re instantly transported to a bustling yakitori restaurant in the heart of Tokyo. The smell of grilled chicken skin, crispy charred meat, and a hint of miso fill the air of this cozy, dimly-lit restaurant. From mastering the basics to rewarding the adventurous with treats such as underdeveloped eggs or chicken anus, Torishou is your dream destination for a Tokyo getaway that costs far less than a plane ticket.

UMI

It’s barely March, but the buzz around UMI has it well positioned to be one of the biggest openings of the year. The food is modern Japanese served casually. In their own words they are “taking traditional Japanese techniques and reintroducing it in a modern way that satisfies cravings for Japanese food, yet presents an element of surprise.” With Executive Chef Bjoern Alexander having trained at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry and the highly-decorated Canadian sommelier, Eliot Faber, in charge of the sake-based drinks, they can’t go wrong.

Xime

Xime is an ambitious project by Sam Norris (formerly of Wishbone) and Kobe-born Chef Jun Nishio, at The Center to satisfy the dearth of well-priced Asian lunch sets (RMB 58-98) for all the offices. Then, when the office workers go home and the neighborhood residents return, the menu veers to an izakaya-type fare with drinks. The DIY maki is a must order. We like the casual environment, the surprising flavors and great prices. During our last visit, three people ate for under RMB 200 a head. We were stuffed and we even ordered a large bottle of sake! That makes Xime the kind of place we love to go for low-key catch ups with friends.

As one of the first Japanese restaurants to serve fusion food in Shanghai, INNO DINING experiments with various cuisines to bring you mouth-watering dishes that pair very well with either wine or a glass of high-ball (whiskey soda). Their miso cheese fondue is a must-try dish, and their homey atmosphere as well as friendly service attract the attention 50 29379 50 14942 0 0 3626 0 0:00:08 0:00:04 0:00:04 3626 of many food enthusiasts.
