21 Hangover Cures from Around the World

2018-03-18 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

Being hungover has to be the worst feeling known to man, yet it is the price of admission for an epic night out drinking. Since St. Patrick's Day was yesterday, and you MIGHT have had a drink or two, we thought we'd offer up some hangover cures from around the world. Try one, or all, and godspeed.

The United Kingdom – English Breakfast

It has got to be a full English fry up. Nothing cures a hangover more than a greasy fried egg. Ideally this traditional piece de resistance should be made in one pan and slapped on a plate with baked beans and cheap white bread. A strong cup of Tetley's or PG tips makes a good side order. If you’re feeling classy hungover (who is ever classy hung over) then you should swap PG tips for Earl Grey and the fried egg for poached.

Germany – Katerfrühstück

Katerfrühstück, try saying that 10 times quickly. This dish makes my stomach roll when sober, so I can't imagine what would happen when hungover. It’s rolled up herring (rollmops) served with pickled gherkins… Apparently it restores electrolytes…

Poland – Pickle Juice

Cześć, jak się masz? Hungover, and not about to drink pickle juice. Pickle juice is made of vinegar, salt and water, with a hint o’ pickle for flavoring. Whilst this may sound bloody awful, I have been told it really helps a red wine headache.

Italy – espresso

Espresso *waves hands around in Italian manner*. Do you have to be so classy Italy… Do you?

Croatia – Burek

If you have never tried Burek then you. Have. Got. To. It’s a delicious pastry meaty vegetable combo that soaks up alcohol like a dream.

Denmark – Reparationsbajer

This is an excellent if somewhat impractical suggestion, fix your hangover with beer! Reparationsbajer roughly translates to ‘repair beer’ low in proof and light in flavor, it’s a good hair-of-the-dog drink.

Czech Republic – Utopenci

In the Czech Republic they are all about the pickles. Their hangover cure is a breakfast that consists of pickled sausages and pickled gherkins. They’re all about the pickles.

Norway – Lutefisk

Lutefisk is dried fish and lye… I have nothing to say about that one…

America – Pedialyte

I had never heard of this, but my American colleagues assure me it’s a thing. It’s a vitamin and rehydration solution for children after they have had sickness and diarrhea, so it makes sense as a hangover cure. Being drunk makes you act like a child and possibly vomit.

Canada – Poutine

Yesssssss. This is delicious. It’s fries with cheese curds and gravy and it is absolutely delicious. You’re going to want to eat this when sober, drunk and hungover. In fact, once you try it you’ll never want to eat anything else ever again. And then you’ll die of blocked arteries. WORTH IT.

Mexico – Menudo

This is a soup made of tribe. That’s the stomach of a cow… oh and they throw in other bits of offal and some chili. Probably going to pass on this one.

Peru – Leche be Tigre

So this is  a non-alcoholic cocktail of ingredients designed to cure your thumping head. It's made of clime juice, coriander, garlic, onion, chillies, salt, pepper and lastly, fish. It sounds quite something. It’s also possibly an aphrodisiac… which is quite something.

Ecuador – Oregano tea

This sounds pretty delicious: it’s simply tea made with oregano leaves, designed to sooth and settle your stomach. I want that.

South Africa – Ostrich egg omlette

This sounds pretty legit. Grab a GIANT ostrich egg, smash it into a pan and hey presto.

Bangladesh – coconut water

Coconut water is high in potassium and contains many helpful ingredients such as antioxidants, ascorbic acids, and magnesium. This is EXACTLY what you want when you’re hungover. Rock on Bangladesh.

Thailand – Pad kee mao

Pad kee mao, or ‘Drunken Noodles,’ are made from giant noodles that are easy to get in your mouth when you’re feeling delicate. Seasoned with tons of spice, meat, seafood, garlic, you name it: it’s in there.

China – Jiaozi

You can’t beat a portion of Jiaozi when you’re feeling delicate, cheap enough that you’re not annoyed if you vomit them up and have to order again. Delicious and bite sized, you can recline and lower them into your gob one at a time until you feel your strength return.

Indonesia – Kaya Toast

This sounds so delicious, I want it next time I’m hungover. Kaya toast is an Indonesian breakfast food prepared with coconut jam, sugar, coconut milk and eggs. Delicious.

South Korea – Bath house

So this isn’t a food or drink, but it is one hell of a good idea. Just yourself to the bath house, stream out the toxins, have your regrets scrubbed away and arise from the thermal pool reborn as the non-hungover version of yourself.

Japan – Umeboshi

The mother of all pickled fruits, umeboshi is a pickled sour plum that’s a bit of a super star. It’s said to help with liver function, digestion and prevents nausea. Winning.

Mongolia – Pickled sheep eyeballs in tomato juice

A Mongolian Mary..? No.
