Eat Foie Gras for RMB 168 or Less

2018-03-22 Cristina Ng ShanghaiWOWeng

We know the struggle is real. You want to eat amazing food all the time, but also want to be a responsible adult who saves money. What should you do when your champagne tastes exceed your beer money? Plan ahead and select very carefully. Here are a few dishes that incorporate foie gras (the fanciest of livers, amirite?) with still plenty left for a visit to Beer Lady afterward.

Bund 8

Pork Pâté En Croute (RMB 148)

The Pork Pâté En Croute is a generous slab of classic pork pate with foie gras baked in flaky pastry dough and a flavorful and well-executed savory gelée. The onion marmalade adds a bit of sweetness.

CommBiz

Beef consommé with seared foie gras and turnip (RMB 98)

CommBiz has just given their menus a spring refresh, and one of the dishes we are most eager to try is this beautifully-clear beef consommé with a slab of seared foie and a lovely assortment of turnips. It’s light, elegant and decadent all at once; available a la carte or as part of their six-course tasting menu (RMB 298).

Epices & Foie Gras

Trilogie de foie gras (RMB 168)

We expect a lot from a restaurant with "foie gras" in the name and Epices & Foie Gras doesn’t disappoint. This starter has three different preparations: terrine with Calvados, pan seared with five spices, and royal of foie gras with apple. It’s a great way to start a meal.

Galleria

Foie Grasso (RMB 128)

The fatty liver is cooked down to a decadent sauce that works well with the assortment of earthy mushrooms. The red prawns are meticulously prepped and cooked; we haven’t seen a prawn this pristine in Shanghai in ages. While the use of foie is restrained, the flavor permeates the dish.

Husk

Pan seared foie gras, brioche & caramelized apples (RMB 138)

Husk has also refreshed their menu recently, but this dish is so beloved they wouldn’t think of removing it. The creamy pan seared foie gras is paired with caramelized apples and a fluffy brioche for a dish that is equally satisfying as a starter or a dessert. Go see what all the fuss is about.

Must Grill

Foie Gras (RMB 138)

For those that like pure, unadulterated foie, this 100g slice tastes like it’s made of money (even if you aren’t). It is seasoned simply with French sea salt, coated with a layer of yellow fatty yumminess and served with caramelized onions and side salad.

QV

Foie with homemade chutney  (RMB 46)

QV certainly earns the award for the most excellently priced foie gras starter, that comes with homemade chutney and nice slices of baguette. It is more than enough for a group of four to share with a few other small plates. Make sure to get some wine, QV is a wine bar after all.
