LOOK: Liquid Laundry's Gorgeous Afternoon Tea Set

2018-03-23 Sophie Steiner ShanghaiWOWeng

When I think of afternoon tea, I picture little, old British Judi Dench sipping earl grey out of a porcelain teacup painted delicately with a pastel floral pattern. Her pinky is gracefully raised as the cup leaves her lips, revealing a coquettish smile as she reaches for another crostini.

It’s really all about the details with afternoon tea; the ornately tiered cake stand, the picturesque tarts and pastries, the expertly presented canapés, the elegant cutlery, the chic tableware, and the smartly dressed patrons to take it in; it’s all a rather classy affair.

Liquid Laundry takes that tasteful concept and infuses it with value and a casual, modern twist.. “Food is the main priority, with a focus on quality, freshness, and unique concepts,” says Liquid Laundry’s General Manager, Eoin Horgan, as he places a two-tiered cake stand in front of us, covered in 10 pairs of beautifully decorated treats, sweets, and savory bites.

Wanting to offer a more elegant alternative to the Happy Hour specials promoted by every other bar, brewery, gastropub, and lounge in Shanghai, the Afternoon Tea Set, which is available every Monday to Friday from 2-4:30PM, is an option for those looking for a food-focused afternoon, rather than a boozy one. At RMB 188 for the Afternoon Tea Set for Two (including tea and coffee), or RMB 288 for those feeling frisky and wanting to add a glass of prosecco to that deal, there is endless value, no matter which way you cut it.

Instead of lackluster Lipton, Liquid Laundry offers everything from Sri Lanka Earl Grey to South Africa Rooibos. For a little afternoon pick-me-up, they also have French Press coffee from Yunnan and Sumatra, as well as your standard coffee fare of lattes, cappuccinos, and espresso.

Out of the five savory options, the Beet Root Crostini with Goat Cheese and Candied Walnuts is out of this world.  The tangy, creamy goat cheese is the ying to the beetroots yang, which is all brought together with the crunch and subtle sweetness of the walnuts.

If you’ve ever indulged in Liquid Laundry’s outstanding brunch, you’re probably already familiar with their Smoked Salmon Potato Rosti. The Afternoon Tea Set’s spin on this comes in the form of the Smoked Salmon Canapé with Dill Cream Cheese. Using salmon imported from Chile, Liquid Laundry smokes the fish in-house, along with making the flakey, buttery crostini it sits on.

On the sweeter side, the Make You Sing Opera Cake is tiramisu on steroids. At over 4 inches tall (10cm), the layers of buttery coffee-infused cream, flakey pastry, and chocolaty goodness seem to go on forever.

The Very Raspberry Macaroon screams Spring, with its juicy raspberries and lightly sweetened homemade whipped cream sandwiched between two delicately crisp and chewy macaroons.

Finally, the ooey-gooey Tart Lemon Tart fully lives up to its name with an incredible jolt of sour and sweet lemon flavor in each bite. The buttery, crust melts in with the silkiness of the creamy filling, making for a beyond memorable morsel.

As intended, Liquid Laundry delivers on flavor, overall experience, and value.  For a unique twist on this timeless tradition, Liquid Laundry delivers. The afternoon tea set menu will rotate seasonally, so be sure to regularly check back to sample each season’s specialty offerings.
